I have a friend who has a red and black star tattoo and right around the red parts he has started to break out in bumps that itch like crazy. He's taken Benadryl but nothing is working. Does anyone know what it might be? is he allergic to the ink? or what he should take to make the itching go away?

thnx

Tell him to go back to his artist and they will usually take care of it for you cuz they don't want a bad rep most go in because of word of mouth and all the artist I ever knew made sure they fixed anything that went wrong with there work.

Has the tattoo not long been done? If it has been there a while then the likelihood of it being a reaction to the ink is unlikely.
However it does sound like some kind of contact allergy so an antibiotics is not going to help. Go and see someone at the chemist Pharmacists are really good at looking at these things and maybe able to give your friend something for it.
My guess is he will probably get some low grade cortisone cream to apply which will solve itchiness and reduce the inflammation.

Has he has tattoo before? if so how did he go with those?

He could be allergic to the ink, latex gloves, antiseptic, or anything that was used on him during the tattoo process. He needs to keep it clean and go back to whomever did the tattoo and ask for help. If it's an allergic reaction the benadrly should work.

Go to the chemist and get some Bepanthenan Cream, and get your friend to rub it on his tattoo and around the effected area and least three times a day, Bepanthenan has an antihistamine and an anaesthetic in it and is recommended by most tattooist..

I had the same thing happen to my last one. Just keep it clean and put a little vitamin E lotion on it. It will clear up but he might have to get it touched up after it heals.
Hope this helps

Your friend may want to see a skin dr./allergist. There are pigments and other thngs in the ink that may be irratating the skin.

hmmmm...i wish oh i wish you had said how long the tat has been there....

if possible...go back to the artist...

tats itch...they can peel, break out a little etc etc...if it doesnt go away after a few days then he should do something..until then just tell him to chill.

he probably is allergic to the ink, or he just isn't used to the new chemical being put into his body, its trying to adjust to the new chemical. i'd give it time to go away. quit scratching it, put baby lotion on it. thats what i do.
