I love adding onions to whatever I cook. But the problem is I cry when cutting them! Help? I've been told to wash after cutting the top and bottom which doesn't work. I've also cut the top before peeling and that doesn't work either....So what next?

Cut your onions close to an open flame like the stove, the heat draws the acidic gases to it and dissipates them

I love onions to, and cutting them sometimes is a problem. There is a lot of old wives tales, like having a lit candle by you to burn off the vapor, or keeping them in the fridge (which helps a little) Onions relase a gas, and when mixed with the moisture in the eye for hydrocloric acid, the buring sensation follows. I really dont know if there is a real solution, i wear glasses sometimes and that seems to help a little.

To get rid of the onion smell, just rub a little lemon juice on your hands

I have had no problems with onion vapour since I bergan this method -
Top and tail the onion, cut in half top to bottom, and place the halved cut side down on the bench. THEN remove the paper layers carefully, then chop or slice, and you'll be OK. The secret is to do most of the cutting before you remove any of the outer papery layers.

Here's my secret, set a burning candle 3 - 6 inches away from the cutting board where you're chopping the onions. The sulfides will burn away before stinging your eyes, and if you get onion juice on your hands, DO NOT touch your eyes!!!! And to get the smell off your hands, wash your hands with lemon soap or just add some lemon juice to the soap you have, tada, no more smelly hands!
Hope this helped you out and you have a great week!

we keep ours in the fridge unpeeled. it seems to work taking them right from the fridge, cutting the bottom, then top and peeling. now if i could just manage to get rid of the onion smell after cutting them, i'd be set. good luck

i always put them in my freezer for about 5 mins and that always seem to work or you can go to walmart and get a mini chopper for about 10 dollars and let it do the work for you
