I have two, one hurt and one didn't. It depends on what part of the body you get one. Close to the bone like the ankle, lower back, hurt. I have one on the lower part of my stomach just below my panties and it tickled.
Anytime you Peirce the body you take the chance of infection. Its all in knowing the person doing the tattoo and how clean things are. what kind of precautions they take. Like cleaning and new needles. I would suggest a small, hidden one.

If you go to a clean respectibal place you can get a nice tattoo. Make sure the shop is lisenced though! Here in WA you do not need to have a license to give tattoos and do not have to go through training of any kind. So pretty much anyone and their mom can tattoo you and you cant sue once you signed the papers if anything goes wrong. Go to a good shop! Never go to a shop that someone runs out of their house. Make sure you look around at different shops before you deciede and neve do an impulse tattoo. Always think it through becuase it stays with you forever. I have one I had for 5 years and it still looks great. The tattoo price runs around $100 an hour so the smaller the tat, the shorter amount of time it takes and the cheaper it is. Never get Bargin tattoos! thats a red flag

The ink used by professional artists, although not rated as are food & drugs, is approved for the use it's intended for. There is no link between tattoos and cancer that anyone's been able to find; folks who say otherwise, state your sources. I have mine below.

There are some allergic reactions *possible* (not probable) for *some* inks. However, that is a far cry from what you're asking.

Personally, I'd be worried about second hand smoke (not to even *think* about smoking itself), eating all sorts of nasty processed foods, preservatives, pesticides, pollution, and a host of other things people do day in & day out... WAY before I'd even consider being worried about a tattoo. That counts not even doing the basic google research; until thallium starts becoming a major component of the inks, it just isn't on my list of things to be concerned about.

They are not bad for your body. They do not cause cancer. As long as a good artist does them there will be no problems. Tats have been around for thousands of years and will be around for along time to come. Tell your friend it's all good and support her. She obviously wants one. It's 2007 baby...let's party.

Well I doubt it, It is more dangerous to go out into the sun or a tanning bed. Why would a Tattoo give you cancer? I have many and I am not worried about it. If she wants one she should get one, you have one life and we're all gonna die anyway, might as well have fun and be happy.

Since the tattoo needle pierces your skin, your have a chance of having a infection. Although, tattoo industries have been asked to minimize this effect but there is still a risk of getting infection.

Well, it depends. Is she getting one with her boyfriends name in it and it will show (maybe on her arm like a sailor?). Or maybe she wants a gang tatoo. Not good!

Unclean tools can carry disease, but most places that have been in business for a long time and have very good reps for health care, not to mention art skill, are going to follow the Health Department rules.

The worst thing about tatoos is that they are for life. (current removal methods are expensive, and do not work very well, including use of lasers) If not very discreet, you might wonder how the heck you can cover it up at work, where you stand to make a lot of money, but not if management happens to frown on tatoos. They can do so, legally.

They also fade and look awful. They wear out their welcome in your own mind and you begin to wonder why the heck you ever got one.

I was suprised to see so many middle age and older people in London with tatoos. Being a snob, but one who can determine some peoples future too, I look upon them and say, hmmmm, probably ignorant, low class, drinks a lot and not anyone I would like to associate with.

Like all prejudices, I would be wrong some of the time, but would only realize that when I got to know the person. With prejudices, I probably would never bother to know the person better.

That may be wrong, but it is how the world works.

Somehow, I got through life without a tatoo, although once in awhile I do think about one now. I do think the cute, discreet ones on a girl can look kinda sexy. They are not the kind I am talking bad about.

i hadnt heard that one, theres many arguements either way tell her 1. you only get one body
2. You only get one life
these can be interpreted in lots of ways, see how she reacts to them, to 1. i think so you gotta look after the body, but then for 2. i'm like i dont want to miss a thing you regret all kinds of things when your old, but i dont want to regret NOT doing things.
