I have a kitchen table with deep scratches. Any cute renovation ideas or quick fixes besides a table cloth?

I thought about getting a custom cut piece of glass to put on top of it, but what would I put under the glass? I'd prefer not to paint it either, but I guess I could consider that as an option if somebody out there has a good brand of paint to use. Thanks!!!

On ebay I saw table top covers that were pretty cute and not that expensive. They even had some that looked like tile. It is an option. And a heck of a lot easier than sanding and painting.

Scratches in the finish or in the wood itself? What type of wood is the table? Oak, Maple, Walnut etc.? Is the wood stained or painted. Is the top solid wood or veneered?
All these make a difference when refinishing.
If the scratches are in the finish only, the finish can be lightly sanded and a couple of coats of new finish will likely smooth out the scratch. If in the wood itself and the wood is just indented, Not gouged out, you can sometimes raise the depressed grain by wetting the scratch [keep it wet for at least an hour, then let it dry, sand and refinish.
If the top is painted a solid color, just fill the scratch, sand and refinish.

A good brand of paint is Varathane. Good hard finish. Comes in different finishes, Matt, Satin, Semi-gloss, Gloss and in various colors. Expensive though.

Wipe down the table with a stain/ sealer that closely matches the stain color on the table. It will mask the scratches a little so they're not so obvious. It's a cheap band aid solution. If you have any textiles that are sentimental, such as grandma's doilies or any other small pieces of fabric treasure, you could could make a collage of memories under the glass.

My grandmother has tables with glass on top! She has old family photos under the glass (I am sure they are copies, if you do this please make copies!) We love going over and seeing all of the pictures! It is like a timeline of sorts! That is a lovely Idea and a great conversation piece!!!
