I have a couple of my Great Grampa's photo albums from 1908 along with a diary from a hiking trip. I want to put them all together in a book so everymember of my family can have a copy. I wonder if the light from the scanner will destroy the original pictures. And if its okay to scan the diary pages, pencil on cheap paper.

NO! As long as its a flat top scanner. Just scan on the higest color resolution.

Maybe it would be best if you took it to a professional restorer (I guess that's what you would call them). I know they have scanned pictures that old but I would assume they have a special scanner as to not damage them or maybe they protect them with something.
