Your question is difficult to answer without more information about you and what you will use the car for other than leaving a destination and getting to Mexico. I also assume you do not speak spanish, do not know anyone in Mexico and have never been there before.
Here are some general thoughts:
You now need a passport to go to Mexico as the best form of identification.
Remember the police do not operate the same there as here for vehicle violations and in many instances the police collect the fine on the spot but will negotiate with you on how much the fine is. the other problem is the communication will be broken english of spanish so it will be difficult. Be pleasant, polite and don't argue or give non verbal readings that will cause you to end up in jail.
Plan an itinerary so that someone knows where you are going and when you are supposed to be there and the route you are taking and communicate regularly to protect yoursellf.
Do not go off with strangers no matter how nice they seem.
Know where the US consulate is and let them know your itinerary and seek their advice as to where you are going and what to expect and how to have a nice vacation without problems.
Mexico is a fine place to visit. I have been there many times but it is Mexican with Mexican ways and customs. If you take the time to learn them you will be accepted more easily and remember a smile does more than anything else to melt the ice and a few spanish words wouldn't hurt either.
You can get some basic spanish from sites on the internet for free by typing in speak spanish lessons for free in the search bar of your browser and you will get several sites. Read to be sure they are free sites and learn or print the basics or buy a pocket phrase hand held device.
Learn the currency and how it is traded. You can lose money on poor cash conversions.
AS to a Car:
1. I assume you are going to rent a car. If this is so call the rental car companies and ask the following questions:
A. Can I rent one of your cars and take it to Mexico?
B. Is there an additional charge to take your rental car to mexico.?
C.Will my domestic insurance cover accidents, damage, theft etc to your rental car in Mexico or must I buy special insurance from you?.
D. Can I rent any of your cars or are there only special cars that you rent ?
E. How long may I keep your car in Mexico ?
F. How do you handle mechanical problems in Mexico if your rental car breaks down ? Who is responsible for payment ?
Not all rental car companies will rent or allow their cars to go to mexico so if you are planning to rent domestically and sneak into Mexico to get the car you want or to save money please don't. The penalties are severe and not worth the risk.
Call your own insurance companies to find out how and if your auto insurance covers you in Mexico for a rental car, and to what extent you are covered. Check the other provisions of your auto policy as to uninsured motorist, etc. to see if they apply in a forieign country. Ask if they have a special rider that will cover your trip in a rental car instead of buying rental car insurance which is usually very expensive.
Your insurance company may provide such coverage but then you must check with the rental car company to see if they will accept the coverage or hold you responsible and make you seek payment from your own company.
Rental car companies have had very bad experiences with their cars going to Mexico and are reluctant to let them go without the additional coverages they sell which increase their revenue and soften the risk for them to some extent.
As to the question of gas usage. Here are some thoughts.
1. The compact car will obviously get better gas mileage than an SUV etc. To find out which cars get the best mileage do this.
A. Determine what size car you will need for the number of passengers, luggage and time you will spend in the car. Little cars tend to tire you out more quickly than large cars but are generally better to maneuver and park so it is a trade off but ultimately remember you will be in a foreign country and the Mexican driving habits are different than in the USA so a small car may not be the best choice if you are involved in an accident.
B. Go to Dept. of Transportation.gov and find the section on gas mileage on vehicles to get a rough estimate of what the car you are renting will do with gas mileage. Remember these statistics are not accurate as what you do in terms of load and driving will affect gas mileage.
Finally;; check with your health insurer as to what coverage you have if you become ill or injured in Mexico and remember to find out what souveniers you can bring back to the USA and if a tax will be applied by either or both countries.
Enjoy the ride the people, the food and the sites, buy a few things, bargain your prices, laugh a lot and have fun but use common sense and do not put yourself at risk unnecessarily.
Good Ludk

RV, station wagon, van, etc. All will run out of gas--just fill up as often as possible before you get into areas where you can't find gas. I used to fill up at every town I got to...just in case there wouldn't be gas for a long time after.

Something with a small engine (4 cylinder only). Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla are some classic, reliable mileage machines.
