I have a relative who has a problem with hearing an echo of her heartbeat in her head. Does anyone know what causes this? All the doctors seem to be stumped. I'd appreciate any information you could provide. Thanks.

I thought i would add that it's not when she exercises. It gets worse when she does, but it's also very annoying when she is simply sitting down.

I have been able to hear my heartbeat in my head for some time. I was recently diagnosed with a heart murmer coming from the main valve between the ventricals in my heart. The doctor was concerned because a normal murmer can be heard louder in one quadrant of the heart, or the other. Mine was equally loud no matter what quadrant of the heart the doctor listened to. Sometimes, I hear my heartbeat louder than other times. Depends on background noise, how much attention I give it, and other factors. I have also lost hearing in the higher frequencies. I don't know if that contributes to it or not. Hope this helps. At least she's not the only weirdo out there!!!!

This is relatively normal and it occurs predominately after exercise when the body is still pumping blood rather forcibly at a higher pulse. The brain is still adjusting to that as well as receiving signals from your nervous system to 'regulate' your vitals to a normal level, so it does so by dilating the blood vessels, especially in the head. And that dilation or expansion causes people to 'hear' and/or 'feel' their heartbeat in their head.
