Given that Protestant ministers commit just as many sexual assaults as their Catholic counterparts, there wouldn't be a church left standing. Which I'm sure wouldn't bother you in the least, but it would certainly be unfair to the millions of people who have never commited a crime and who love Jesus Christ. We have a right to worship together and all the rhetoric in the world hasn't been able to change that so far.
And as far as people knowing about what was going on, that's a load of bollocks, if ever there was one. In a fair number of cases, the victims' own families and closest friends had no idea that the person had been molested. You expect us to believe that someone who saw a child once a week at Mass or service could look at him and tell that something was going on?
Yeah, right. And as far as the punishment is concerned, the law determines that. Not someone with an ax to grind against Christians and the churches. And for that, I am very thankful to God.

Punishment should be the same as it is for anyone who breaks this law. Prosecute them according to the law and if convicted, send them to prison.
"The Church" should remove them from position and cooperate fully with legal authorities in their prosecution. The churches should have safeguards in place, and most do, to prevent this abuse from taking place. If the church first discovers that something is amiss, the church should be reporting the wrongdoing immediately like any teacher, social worker or medical worker.
Jesus wouldn't be putting up with this kind of abuse. He is willing to forgive, but don't think He would cover up this sort of thing. I don't personally know of any church or church leader who would cover this sort of thing up or look the other way.
As far as 'destroying churches' talk, that's ridiculous. That would be like destroying the house you live in because someone else living there broke the law. Your assertion that Christian people 'help them commit their atrocities' is slanderous.

The right thing to do would be: Exposition of the individual, evident excomunication by the church (some chance!) and finally condemnation within the civil law of the land (as served to all other such perpetrators).
The ultimate judicial sentence rests with the Vatican alone in cases like these....so justice is forever and unjustly negligible!

No it would not be smart to destroy "all those churches". That is a very unenlightened suggestion. Certainly as those priest and others are exposed they should be have to face the secular law to the fullest extent. And should any other priest that helped then, they too should be tried and convicted on charges if they are found guilty.

To expel them from the Catholic church & services. I personally think priests should be allowed to marry so we don't have those kind of incidents happen as often. They're the reason people seem to have this myth that all gay people are like that and that priests are gay (because in actuality, most gay and lesbian people are NOT pedophiles just simply have variants of sexual orientation, and priests come in all types).

The punishment for Catholic and Christian should be the same as the law provides; which is not nearly enough. Any one who protects or harbors them has committed a crime. However, they should be innocent until proven guilty. That is the law. Unfortunately, the truth, for everyone accused of doing anything illegal is guilty until proven innocent.

The sad truth is that the church has only caught the attention of the public and media because of the hypocrisy. But, hypocrisy is not the crime, the child molestation is and it should be prosecuted as any other child molestation case. Not good enough - then let's get serious about prosecuting and punishing child molesters no matter who they are or which children they molest.

CHOP "IT" OFF!! Sorry but I think any1- priest, teacher, parent, relative, whoever! should get what they give! If they wanna be sickooo's and do that to a poor little child who can't defend themselves they should be put in prison and let all the guys that want to take turns w/him and let him feel how that innocent child felt! I suppose I will get alot of negative replys to this but I'm sorry, I'm a parent and if any1 ever touched my kids that way I would want them to get a taste of their own medicine. (every1 is entitled to their own oppinion right?)

any murder or sex offense should have a minimum of life in prison until death with no possibility of parole ever. public hanging should be brought back also for identity thieves, or robbery. trust me if we had all of this you would never need to lock anything. I was recently in a country where almost all crimes were punished by be-headings..........nobody ever has to take their keys out of the car there.

Well, that's the stupidest post ever.
The vast majority of clergy have lived quiet lives of sacrifice and service on behalf of their congregations. Those who have abused that trust should be arrested and put on trial. And, I can tell you, that if a congregation had a notion that a priest was indeed committing those terrible acts, the action would be immediate.
