If so, what software/programs can I use to edit my movies? Can I turn a frame into a picture and can photoshop read the output? Anything besides windows movie maker

The second part of your question .. can you turn a frame of a video clip into a still photo ... the answer is "sort of" .... but it isn't recommended. Here is why: video clips on still cameras are low resolution 640x480, and it won't look "right". You can do it, but the results will probably be disappointing.
Some of the Canon cameras have a separate video button, so that you can also take a high resolution photo while shooting video. You might check to see if yours has this capability, and if so, use it in the future.
For editing the video, try this free program ... it's simple and basic, but it's what I use before importing the file into proshow gold to put several together.
