Depends what you want, Chiang Mai is in the mountainous north, Phuket is on the southwest coast. I think you should check out the Four Seasons Chiang Mai, unbelievable resort just outside Chiang Mai, very quiet and serene. In Phuket, if you want the best, try the Banyan Tree or the JW Marriot there, among others. Don't overlook Bangkok, The Peninsula, on the river, was rated by Travel and Leisure as the best hotel in the world a couple of years ago, The Oriental, also on the river is always rated among the top 10 hotels in the world. The Four Seasons Chiang Mai was rated the 11th best in the world, the Banyan Tree Phuket 33rd, and the JW Marriot is also highly rated worldwide. These hotels are quite expensive by Thai standards, but resaonable by western standards. I haven't stayed at the Banyan Tree or the JW Marriot, but can highly recommend the others. They all offer different locales, mountains, beach or city, but all would be very special for a honeymoon.

I've been on my honeymoon to Thailand last August. I've spent most of my time in the North and loved it!! Chang Mai is a really nice town. But it also depends on what you want to do. Chang mai and Chang rai are perfect if you're planning to go trekking. In Chang Mai you will find plenty of agencies that organize tours. The forests, rice-fields and waterfalls in the North are marvelous! And you can also get to meet the tribes-people.
However, if you just want to relax on the beach I would go to the South. Maybe Krabi. Phuket is packed with tourists! But don't forget that August is the rainy season so you might not be able to swim in the ocean!

depends on what you consider fabulous. Also,
if you're currently staying in sanur, then phuket, or other beach resorts in thailand will be similar. Then i would suggest going to CM, spa for the lady and golf for the gent (both are extremely cheap compare to bali). If you want something memorable definitely do one of those riding elephant trip on the mountains. There's a 3-day tour to visit the kaeran trip, and 1 day to explore the wonderful food, and sights.

If on the other hand you're in kuta, then head for the beaches in thailand. Koh Samui is tooooo foreign...try phi phi, phuket or even koh tao.

Really depends on what you're after.
For a honeymoon, I'd recommend a beach spot - some suggestions here have been good:
Phuket - pretty good beaches with lots of resort hotels & amenities.
Ko Phi Phi - better beaches, but not quite as good in the amenities (shopping et al).

A good compromise between the two would be Ko Samui (on the eastern coast). It's closer to Bangkok for your transfer, and has a lot of excellent hotels & beautiful beaches.

I actually went there for my wedding/honeymoon, and we stayed at a wonderful resort run by a European company. A lot of my friends have gotten married in the past few years, and most would agree that one of the best venues has been the Rocky Resort on Ko Samui! Ask to speak to Luke, and tell him "Don from Japan" put you in touch with 'em! ;)

I'd recommend the lovely Racha Island Resort (perfect for honeymooner's) or the Amanpuri Resort on Phuket.

It depends on what interests you. For me, Chiang Mai was neat coz it had a big buddhist temple on a hill and a pretty cool jewellery store where you could by classy silver bracelets and stuff. I avoided the tourist routes as much as possible though. I travelled up the east side of thailand where there was hardly a westerner to be seen. In fact, I dont recall seeing one western person the whole time I travelled nth east. This was back in 1989 before all this widespread terrorist crap started.

depends on if you wish to go where all the tourists go, or if you'd like spmewhere a little less over crowded. phukette is fantastic, but so touristy.
perhaps try gilli trawan, a small island in the area, great for younger people with a lot less of the main stream tourist trafic.
meanwhile congrats and enjoy the honeymoon

some very nice (and pricey) resorts on Phuket--see tripadvisor.com Phuket forum for good suggestions.

Bangkok is fun but hectic, don't know if really honeymoon-suitable, but if you find you like Thailand, ya gotta go back and check it out!

Consider Koh Phi Phi (where Leonardo de Caprio's film "the Beach" took place) or Krabi.

Try this site, http://www.gokrabi.com/

We went there for some romantic getaway and we were not disappointed.

Have fun!
