Someone said that studies show "the willing serves better"... this is true but studies have not shown what 4 uninterrupted combat tours have done to the "willing." We need to assess what 2-4 (maybe more in the future) tours do to morale and health risks to these soldiers. Enlistments are way down; the American people can not expect veteran soldiers to stay there for years... if enlistments do not increase then we will have to draft or withdraw. It is not realistic to think that these soldiers can endure a 6th or 7th duty. It seems that people are not thinking about the dangers to our communities when starined soldiers occupy war zones... war crimes go up, suicides increase, and substance abuse occurs... (all of this also comes home when the soldiers leave the war zone).
I never thought that we would ever need a draft time in my lifetime... then again, I never thought we would occupy a nation in the Middle East six years ago. I also never thought that the United States would use questionable interrogation practices against prisoners that have no rights (civic or international treaty-based rights) or that we release prisoners to nations that torture. Anything can happen in this climate... if we continue this we will have to re-initiate the draft.

I don't really see the need for it.
Plus, Americans nowadays wouldn't like being forced into something like military service. It shows the difference of our society today compared with, say, the 1930s and 40s, where patriotism was at its peak and men were lining up everywhere to register for wartime service.
I'm not bashing Americans, I am one... I'm just saying that a draft would have a negative result, and those who desire other things in life would protest, especially if they didn't agree with what they were fighting for.
If you take the War in Iraq right now, there's plenty of people who go over and fight for their country if asked (some would without being asked), regardless of whether the believe it's right or wrong. I know many people like that. On the other hand, I know many people who would be furious if they were forced to join the U.S. Army, for reasons such as they were staunchly opposed to the war and why we're in Iraq, or they were against "senseless violence." There are numerous things that would cause Americans to not want the draft.
In conclusion, I have to say the draft wouldn't be such a great idea.

Absolutely not! I am a Recruiter, and I hope to never have to go to war with some people who call themselves Americans. The draft proved one thing, you get the worst of society and in the end, more people end up dying because they do not want to be there in the first place. NO DRAFT.

No, the military as a profession, is much better without the lowest forms society has to offer. If you REALLY want to roll back the clock on something, how about rolling it back on personal integrity, and self sensorship? Anyone remember the days of "Loose lips sink ships?" The Sedition Act was not needed. No one wanted to appear treasonous and certainly, no one in their right mind wanted to be viewed as aiding the enemy... The draft? No.

contained in relation to extra "conflicts", as you call them, that's relatively in all probability that the draft could desire to be reinstated. Emergency war measures enables this reinstatement. in spite of the indisputable fact that, could desire to one conflict end jointly as yet another starts off, issues could desire to stay the comparable- volunteer armies, etc. and no draft as of yet. the ten% or greater unemployment we've in our united states of america has a tendency to maintain the point of volunteers adequate in the intervening time.

I think that this war in terror needs help. If the threat is as much as Bush makes it then the draft should be reinstated so all cross sections of society can be involved. Ask yourself this, Do you know anyone who has died and what sacrifices have you made?
I believe for the vast majority our answer is we know no one and we have made no sacrifices.
However I don't believe Bush's premise nor his exaggerations on the war. There exist better solutions than wholesale killing of innocents.
Terrorists deserve to die. Our troops and those who are collateral damage do not.

no, no one should be forced to go to war if they do not wish too. many US citizens join the military willingly every month. great benefits and decent pay. the US should not have a draft or they will have to suffer a war at home.

we have no need of it,we are not at war(the war on terror,is like the war on drugs, meaningless). IMO it would hurt the military.
edit. we had a draft in the civil war and WW2. were those people the worst of society,i find it strange that people who claim to be vets are insulting vets

No, I don't think we should. The Draft should always been the last option on the table.
