My 13 year old Sherherd/Rottweiler b**ch has all of a sudden fell pregnant, we couldnt get her spayed due to complications and she would probably not have survived the op but we dont recall her being in season recently. She has been to the vet who says she is fine, her and the pups are both healthy and are due in approx 10 days and to keep a close eye on her but didnt tell us what the symptoms of something going wrong could be. We should have asked but we were so happy she was ok. What should i be looking out for?

The vet says we mightnt have noticed her being in season as she is so old the 'period' would have been short and light. As for not noticing her being bred...we have a male dog too, since we didnt know she was in season there was no need to keep them apart. I know the stages and signs of labour as she has had a litter a few years ago.

I am not a breeder. She is a family pet not a form of income. Like i say...it was an accident.

Look for a good book on dog breeding for more specific answers but you should make sure you have a whelping box set up and be collecting newspaper to line it with - trust me you will need lots!
If your girl starts acting lethargic or licking her vulva excessively you need to get her checked out - it may be puppies on the way or it may be an infection.
Watch for abnormal discharge - bright red, greenish or smelly.
Basically if you are unsure of anything contact the vet - better safe than sorry.
Good luck - Dalfyre

Just watch your dog while she is in labor.

If it starts taking a terribly long time for her to deliver her pups..call a vet. She could have breached puppies.

I think you can watch out for temperature, too. Just watch and make sure she isn't struggling too bad.

If you have questions, you should call your vet. With a 13 year old dog, I'd be a bit wary.

Seriously, why did you allow your 13 year old dog to get pregnant?!? Responsible breeders don't let their dogs have litters after about 8 years old. 13 years is really quite old for that mix. I'd be more worried that she would die in labor than in complications from a spay surgery.

If you missed her coming into season, and missed her when she was actually bred, are you sure you would see the signs if she started to go into labour?

At that age you should call the vet back and have them tell you everything that would tell you what an emergency is.
