Found a white substance in my sons coat pocket...he says its just baking soda...to help clear up his face...friend told him it works...i dont believe him...he even told me to taste it to check. I dont know what Im checking for. Never used. What do i do? Im afraid to taste it.

You might not know what cocaine tastes like, but you do know what baking soda tastes like. Cocaine really has no flavor, but it will leave your tongue a bit numb on the spot you lick. (if i remember right...lol)
How old is your son? Does he stay up all night and talk alot? if so maybe then worry about it being coke.

There are lots of drugs that aren't cocaine that also look like white powders. Cocaine is an anaesthetic related to lidocaine, benzocaine, novocaine, etc. So if you touch it to your tongue and get a numb spot, it's probably cocaine... But if not it could still be another drug. So the best idea is probably to taste it and compare it to baking soda to make sure it IS baking soda like he says! If it's not baking soda you know he's lying, which pretty much tells you for sure it's some sort of drug.
Another way to tell if it's baking soda is by putting a drop of vinegar on it. If you ever made "volcanos" in elementary school you'll remember than baking soda fizzes and turns into a bubbly froth upon contact with vinegar.

It wont hurt to taste a small amount. Basically dab your finger in the powder and lick it with the tip of your toungue. If it is cocaine it will taste "mediciny" (ok?) and if you get enough of it on your toungue you will feel a tingly sensation followed by an immediate sense of numbness. Though a more subtle effect, the two combined tells ya you have cocaine. Hope that helps.

Take a tiny bit on the tip of you finger and touch it to the tip of you tongue. If you feel a tingling sensation, it is probably cocaine. The small amount won't hurt you or make you a drug fiend if it is. How much did you find. If it is a small amount, it is probably some type of drug. Do you have any baking soda in your home? Take a look at it and compare it to the stuff you found. I hope that it is a case of someone telling your son something stupid then what you suspect.

tasting cocaine will not hurt you
Cocaine has a sour taste, like dried lemon and will make your tongue feel a little bit numb.
Baking powder you can compare the taste of from your own pantry.
