Last week my front tooth started to hurt, I had chipped this tooth about 6 years ago and had a root canal done and a crown put over it. At first it felt like something was pushing on it. It got worse over next couple days so the dentist gave me antibiotics becuase he said it was infected. The pain got extremely bad for the next couple days, i had really bad pain in my gums above the tooth, all down my jaw and really bad headaches. Now most of the pain is gone but if I push on my crowned tooth it still hurts and I noticed that if I wiggle it, it moves back and forth a little. I wonder if it got infected because it has come loose, and if so how can it be fixed or how can i tell if the crown is loose, or the entire tooth is loose? It also has a post that was put in when I chipped it.. maybe that has come loose???

It sounds like the crown has come loose. It can be fixed. I know going to the dentist is not pleasant, but I think you have to tell the dentist about it again, because if the crown is loose, it may become infected again. The repair of this shouldn't be any worse than the original crown being put on...much easier since the tooth already has a root canal. Good luck.

Sounds like your root canal has gone bad on you. The infection can make the tooth loose. You are obviously doing better, but what caused the infection must be fixed. Until your dentists pulls of the crown he will not know if anythin is wrong with post they put in. It would be a comon thing in this case to refer you to a specialists. He will redo the root canal. If your tooth is loose from the tooth structure giving way, it will be more involved than just drilling through the crwon and reworking the root canal. Did it get hit? Is therer any decay at the margin? Another possibility- it may have been cracked orginally--- just couldn't be detected in t he xray. Only your dentist can fix it. Your options will be to pull off the crown nd see what is there, drill through the crown on the backside and try to do a rework, go through the apex of the tooth and do a retro fill, a small incision in the gum, an d bone to get to the apex of the tooth from the roof of the mouth, or just plan pull it. If it is your front tooth you will have to repalce it with a bridge, or parital. Lots to thnk bout/ cost will come into at some point. They do marvelous things these days, it just costs a lot for medical and dental. Implants are more and more common, but they are very expensive. 3-4 K for the implant and over 1 k for the crown,

Something similar happened to me several years ago after I chipped my front tooth playing raquetball. They crowned it at the time and a few years later I need a root canal. My dentist couldn't beleive me when I came back a few months later with the same pain. He repeated the root canal, but I ended up needing a surgical root canal performed by an oral surgeon. Even then I still had some discomfort and pain. Finally a different dentist figured out that the crown changed my bite and he recontoured my lower teeth so they fit together better. Only a good dentist will be able to tell you what your problem is, using x-rays and possibly taking off the crown. It could be a lot of things. I know it's not much fun in the mean time. Hang in there, and I hope you get this resolved soon!

DENTAL POSTS, ESPECIALLY THE METAL ONES ARE KNOWN TO SPLIT DENTAL ROOTS. HAVE YOUR DENTIST EVALUATE THIS TOOTH FOR A POSSIBLE ROOT FRACTURE.
