While I was trying to install windows vista, after the expanding of the files, It had to restart, and it had a press any key to boot from cd. When I did that, It showed me to a screen that looked like it was loading something, but that screen just stayed there. When I didn't do anything while it showed the boot from cd message, it showed me to the windows boot manager, with the options windows setup and earlier version of windows.When I clicked that windows setup, though,it went to that screen again. XP works like a charm, though.

When I go to XP, sometimes it shows an error message that says that it"failed to install vista".

My upgrade to Vista from Xp Pro was failing because of a driver left by either Daemon tools or Alcohol I don't remember exactly.
Make sure you run the Vista upgrade wizard and follow absolutely every recommended action.
It took me like 4-5 attempts before I got it right
try typing in the CD key when prompted and make sure "activate windows when online" is unchecked.
Stick with it, eventually you'll get it - I successfully upgraded and all my file and settings remained intact throughout the migration

When it reboots the first time, don't boot from the CD. While installing Vista it will reboot a few times and for all of them, don't boot from the CD (actually its a DVD but you know...)
It has loaded core files onto the hard drive in order to be able to boot from and continue the installation.
I don't know if that's your whole problem or not but it's probably part of it.

Did you select the upgrade option or clean install? I would do a clean install on diff. hard drive or partition and save xp for now to make sure it works for you first.
