Christ told His disciples to go to the ends of the earth and Baptize in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Since the time of Christ, missionaries have been doing just that. They came with the explorers and with the hope of baptizing who ever lived here, including the Native Americans.

They were no missionaries at all, they were explorers with the hope that on some good day will takeover the new lands.
Do you have doubts of what has happened?

"Why did the missionaries come?"
and
"Why did the church decide to open missions?"
May be two entirely different questions!
As far as the missionaries are concerned, it is/was probably a matter of personal faith.

To spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That's the reason missionaries do EVERYTHING they do.

Because the Bible mandates believers to spread the word to the ends of the earth.
It didn't though, tell them to kill those who wouldn't believe. It didn't tell them to separate children from their parents so that they could be properly educated. It didn't tell them to destroy the history of the peoples that they conquered. and on and on.
