any real martial art with a good instructor is good. check in for the fun part first though because some instructors can be intense and strict.

fencing isnt the standard martial arts sport, but i started just before i turned 15 and now have been doing it for 3 1/2 years and i love it. its a lot of fun and it really develops the muscles in your legs and your motor skills. i also a have lost about 17 pounds since i started. you can borrow any equipment you need at first from a coach. if you look in a phone book or online you can probobly find a club that teaches classes. if there is a ymca near you they might have classes periodaclly.

To be honest any activity will help you to get in better shape. It all depends on how much effort you put into it. Cardio kickboxing may be something you would enjoy. Its more aerobic then martial art, but if at a later time you wanted to practice martial arts it would help.

Cardio kickboxing is wimpy to me. You dont really train you body to be strong but only fast. Also they dont really train in any fighting thats realistic. I recomend a combo of eagle claw kung fu, muy thai and jujitsu (all of these are very renowned styles) If you can only take one I recomend eagle claw, followed by muy thai , then jujitsu. But whatever you take make sure it has ground fighting to because if you dont know what to do when your there your screwed. I do however like cardio kickboxing's music somewhat but the problem is they dont really train enough in strength. Also its so girly. Now I know kickboxing is good enough but cardio is really girly. They dont train in hitting realistic targets as much as they do little pads and they dont spar in almost all of the classes so you wont know how to apply. I wouldnt really call cardio kickboxing a martial art as much as I would a martialart-like exercise. I know I came down kinda hard on cardio kickboxing so sorry if I offended anyone

Any class with a good instructer is fine. I used to train in brazilian ju jitsu, it is a submission sport.

Style doesn't matter. Find a good school in your area.
