KING CHARLES SPANIELS are calm, quiet, a little timid but well behaved, and ready to give you lots of affection when you get home from work. They are not know for howling like the Sussex Spaniel when left alone, they are just an average barker, not barky like a Cocker when someone comes to the door. Maybe having two of them would be nice so they could keep each other company.

WHIPPETS are laid back, sweet, intelligent, docile, independent and calm indoor dogs. They need to be allowed to run so they would require more exercise than a spaniel.

COCKAPOOS have a very pleasant temperament, are sweet and non-destructive.

I'm afraid if you got a Collie it would be a problem if you kept it inside all day. They tend to bark a lot when kept indoors long periods of time and certainly don't do well if kept in an apartment. I think Terriers, working, sporting and hunting dogs would have a problem left all day also.

I think a King Charles Spaniel would be a your best choice since they require little exercise and they make a wonderful lap dogs and are soooo sweet!

If you aren't home a lot, don't get a dog. I know that's probably not what you want to hear..but it's not fair.

If you are only gone for part of the day, I'd reccommend a small dog. If you are gone a lot, defenitely do not get a dog in the herding group. (Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Rough and Smooth Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs, Shetland Sheepdogs, etc.) You probably wouldn't want anything in the Retrieving or Sporting group, either. (Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Curly Coated Retrievers, English Springer Spaniels..etc.) These dogs are very smart and require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation.

If you are insistant on getting a dog, I'd reccommend a small breed. They love attention, too- but they do not require near as much exercise.

Larger dogs seem to be more able to cope with being at home alone from time to time. Although you should look at each individual dog's temperment. The breed isn't really a good thing to go by. We've had good and bad from different breeds. Just depends on the animal's personality. I would certainly look for an older dog though, instead of a new puppy. That's just asking for trouble. A Mastiff is my personal favorite!! Any dog should be able to be left alone while their owner is at work. If they tend to be destructive every time you leave the house I'd definately invest in a crate. Hope this helps.

A collie may be too high maintenance unless you have a big, secure yard and another dog for company.

When you work all day, the best dog to get is a stuffed animal.
Or a poster.
Really, it's not fair, even with a yard to leave them home.
Consider a cat, they don't really care if you're there or not.
Or a fish.

Dog's in general need alot of attention. They domesticated themselves to us, so obviously enjoy being with people. If you are gone out alot, it's best not to get any dog at all.

Since you are out quite often, I would strongly recommend you get a FAKE dog. You know, one that is stuffed!!....LOL But seriously, dogs require too much attention.
