I believe it is culture, value and standard difference. If you live in China, Hong Kong or Taiwan, seriously, you properly will have a culture shock. I was born and brought up in Hong Kong and I have been living in Sydney since 1995. I have experienced culture shock myself; even I have come across western culture in HK before living in Australia.
For example, we seldom say thank you even at home or with close friends. It is like a custom not using the term “thank you”. We do not have much body contact. We seldom hug or cuddle with close relatives or friends. We seldom say, “I love you” or express our own feelings. When I was studying in Australia, I found out that it is so rude by just not saying thank you or doing minor things. Westerners found it is rude because they are using their standard. If you were brought up there, you wouldn’t feel the same.
As the American’s TV and movies are so widely seen in China and Asia. Many Chinese have noticed the difference in terms of culture and values. However, the majority customs values and standard remains the same.
So please keep your mind open. Try to understand their customs, values and standards and tolerate it as we are all living in this planet. And that’s why we have so many different cultures and make the world so interesting and colorful.
PS. There are lots of friendly Chinese there- just like me keep smiling. :-)
Have a nice day! No worries! Mate!

Cuz we have short tempah.
Just kidding. I find lots of rude people everywhere. I agree with the other people about differences in culture. This might be a bit of a tangent, but I can say that a lot of Chinese parents also don't show a lot of love to their kids. That's how I grew up, along with some other American-born Chinese I know. Consequently, it look me a while to learn to say "I love you" to people I love! I'm not sure of the philosophy behind this kind of child rearing but I'm sure it's along the same lines as how they are/aren't polite.
Interesting question. Now I'm gonna go grill my mother.

They probably are polite, but the cultural standard is different. The values are different.
Many have been reared in a communist and brutal society under the regime of Mao. Most Asians are used to more crowded living environments in Asia than westerner's are. Asians are not as hung up on "touching".
I live in SE Asia now. I see and understand why we have some of the differences we have, and usually it isn't just plain rudeness.

It depends on what one considers to be "polite". When I was travelling in China, I experienced many things that would be considered "impolite" by North American standards but not by Chinese standards.
The reverse was also true - there were things I did unintentionally that would be considered "impolite" by Chinese standards.

Living in Asia- I found allot of cultural differences- one thing was that Americans tend to stand further apart from each other than people in other countries- etc
It's different cultures standards- for all you know- they probably think you're round-eye self is very rude.

Why would you say that?
Anyone can be impolite, not just Chinese. It's regardless of race. It's how a person was raised and where he or she was brought up. I don't think the Americans or Indians can all be polite, so why do you stereotype Chinese?

The culture is different. They don't small talk as much like us westerners do. So what you perceive as a little rude, they are just being themsleves and not really interested in being your friend or being nice to you. Usually they just want you to eat the chow mein then leave. THATS WHAT i LIKE ABOUT THEM.
