I had a beagle that had a slipped disc and lose all use of her back legs, I asked what could be done the vet said even with surgery she would never be the same, it's very expensive, experimental and no one in my area did the surgery. I looked at her and as hard as it was to do, I didn't want her to suffer I had to have her put down. I hope she be ok!!!

I had a Dobe with the same problem, but after a few weeks he was acting fine THEN as he aged, and the weather turned cold, or damp, we had major problems. The vet diagnosed him with a slipped disc, then after 3 yrs of progressively getting worse, I contacted a chiropractor by the suggestion of an internet friend. We started chiro treatments on a weekly basis, and he improved to the point of no more drugs, and he has free movement. The Chiro told us that it would of been a lot easier on him if we would of started treatment earlier, like weeks after he did it. Horse Chiropractic and massage therapists can be found throughout most areas. If you have problems locating one, check a few yahoo group listings that deal with race horses, or show jumper horses. Good Luck!

Its not unheard of and yes x-ray need to be taken to be absolutely sure that's what it is. Yes it is serious depending on how bad the slippage is.. Also I would look around for a vet very experienced with this kind of problem.
It is the same as in humans but with dogs it can cause serious problems. If the disk ruptures it can cause permanent damage. Usually the dog is put on steroids to reduce the swelling or at least anit inflammatory drug. It is common among small breed dogs that jump and bounce around alot, also in dachshunds.

It isn't common in anydog, but it happens, what does the vet recommend? probably surgery to repair the disc? It's the only way unfortunately. You can get a second opiion of course, why did he not take exrays? hmmmm

You should probably make sure the dog stays off her legs for a while, and have her lay down and not try to walk much. Get her some pain pills because it probably hurts like heck. Take her to the vet again and make sure they give you something to help her. I'm not sure what it is called but there is something they can do.
