I had my driving test scheduled for this morning, but I didn't even get to drive because the instructor pointed out that my blinker light was exposed. The blinker and all of the other lights work properly, the plastic cover is a little broken on one side though. She said that I could get a ticket for this and we couldn't continue the exam. I understand getting a ticket for something like a crack in a windshield. The exposed blinker seems minor to me though. So was her reason valid or was she just trying to zoom through the tests today? I asked if I could quickly get it fixed and come back to take the test, but she said I'd have to reschedule and also mentioned that they were under-staffed today, with only two examiners available. I am very dissapointed.

You would probably get a ticket only if you got pulled over for something else. The police have better things to do than pull people over for cracked car lights.

Your blinkers are important equipment. If you had your licence and were stopped - you may get a warning, giving you time to make the repair. The second stop without fixing it would SURELY get you ticketed, though.

I am sorry you were disappointed - but you need to be sure the car is in working order - both for your safety and for the others on the road with you.

Good luck on your next attempt.
Peace.

Technically the instructor was right...you could have received a ticket for this, as the Highway Traffic Act reads that there shall be no other light than red to the rear, therefore if you had any "white" light showing on your tail light then yes, you could be ticketed.

In most states, the exposure of a light other than red or amber to the front or rear is illegal. She was right. Take some red or yellow tape and cover up the crack.

Sure enough. In the next town we have some over zealous gentlemen who seem bent on funding their new courthouse. They would nab you for "Light Maintenance".
