it is a 93 Taurus 3.0 I had a spark plug wire catch on fire a couple of weeks ago i replaced the wires and plugs but one of the wires caught on fire again a different one though. I also noticed that four others had fire/burn damage on them. The reason i was thinking it might be the distributor is it has about a centimeter or so of side to side play and from what i hear thats not normal. by the by the distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires, and the ignition module and coil are all newly replaced

I've never heard of anything like this. I'd say just have it towed to a shop. Good luck.

If the distributor had not been loosened and only the cap had been replaced. The cap should not have play at all.Remove the screws and retry putting the cap on securely and then retighten the screws.Be sure that the sparkplug wires are not near any part of the exhaust manifolds and are in their correct firing order. You can get firing order from most auto stores or manual.Check for spark before attempting to start. If no spark is present. This could be caused by faulty Ignition Coil and or Ignition Module. Most Auto Stores will test the Ignition Module for you for free.Auto Zone is well known for this. You may also want to do a diagnostics test for possible 'brain' failure. It is known as an EEC Module.Electronic Engine Control.Good Luck!

I agree... get that thing to a shop. you know how hot it has to be to catch a silicone-jacket plug wire ON FIRE? and if the distributor has the play you say it does, it would SHELL the cap... something's not right here, and needs to be checked by a pro.
