I think a lot of theists are so captured by their world view they have no way of conceptualizing atheism. This question I think fits into their weltanschauung so nicely because it assumes that there is a magic key that, if they can find it, will open the door between atheists and theists.
However, the atheist has already examined the theistic point of view, and there's no key, in fact, no door for most of us. Instead there is an alternative, naturalistic world view that parsimoniously does away with the need of a deity to aid in either creation of the universe or regulation of it.

I think most of them believe that we are uneducated, and haven't read the Bible. They probably think we're wondering around in an ignorant daze waiting for someone to enlighten us.

Most of them wrongly think that we really believe, but we are just saying we don't for some reason. They think we are scared little children.
