Does Windows Media Player have a decoder for .m4a files?

Maybe not.. try an online file converter and see if it'll do the trick..
I suggest http://www.zamzar.com/ and try converting it to .mp3 or something.

Windows media does not as far as I know. However there are other alternatives other than iTunes. You can use Winamp for example.
