it is a 93 Taurus 3.0 I had a spark plug wire catch on fire a couple of weeks ago i replaced the wires and plugs but one of the wires caught on fire again a different one though. I also noticed that four others had fire/burn damage on them. The reason i was thinking it might be the distributor is it has about a centimeter or so of side to side play and from what i hear thats not normal. by the by the distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires, and the ignition module and coil are all newly replaced

I don,t understand how your wire are catching fire. The only way would be that they are touching on the exhaust manifolds.the distributor will not cause them to catch on fire

If your distributor shaft is broken more than likely your car wouldn't run because it probably would jump time.If your wondering if your distributor cap is cracked, start it after dark and see if you can see any sparks coming from it.
