I've never seen a save-the-date card with formal names nor with the date spelled out, even if its not a magnet (I used to work in a partty supply store where couples would come in and order thier invites). But just remember, they are supposed to be mailed weeks before the invitation (I just recieved an invitaion with a save-the-date card in it -wants the point of that?!)
Also, I saw someone's response to you telling you to write the people being invited on it. I don't think you should do that. The point of the save-the-date card is for guests (especially those who live far) to know well in advance when the wedding is - that's it.

They are less formal and they can have the first names and just be spelt out. I saw a design for one where you pulled it out and it was big letters attached by a string (like the foil Merry Christmas signs)
I think a sweet card with a couple kissing snowmen would be cute.
I know some people get postcard from where they are getting married and send those.
Have fun with it! Just make sure it says Save the Date or Please Reserve the date and its all good.

It technically a note asking people to hold a date open, because a formal wedding invitation will soon follow. Write them out as you would sending a note to the people. Nothing formal about them.

I made mine formal. I bought a few nice cards and the rest i printed on a patterned printer paper. I made mine formal sounding. I said "save the date" at the top and then said wedding of (my whole name) to (fiance's whole name) on blank date, where, and at what time.
You can make it informal if you want though. However you want.

in case you have a great style of folk coming from out of city and out of state, i could surely deliver them by ability of the tip of October or November on the maximum recent. Then deliver the invites out in like March or April, with an RSVP date of sometime in June or July so which you will have an precise visitor record.

They are more informal, and putting Chris and Kate (and maybe their last names) is fine. However, just like the invitations, specify everyone who is invited. (Chris, Kate, Daisy, and Timmy--their kids), except for "And guest." That way they know ahead of time what to expect.

Make it simple. You can be more formal with your actual invitation.
