I've noticed that many of the school assignments have political slants, particularly in science and social studies nowadays. I'd like to hear what others think on the matter... do you support what the public schools are teaching us, or would you prefer them to be educating us with a more unbiased opinion?

Write as much as you want... I'm curious to see how the general population approaches this matter. :)

OMGs!

I was just trying to explain this to my GF. Her son is in the 4th grade and a recent English assignment was "find the subject of each paragraph".

As I read over his assignment I felt like I was being evangelized by the subject matter. It was talking about which jobs were "better" then others. Not even which job would be better for the main character or something like that; the paragraphs were talking directly to the audience giving opinion and stating it as fact! And this is just a mild one that comes to mind.

I have seen this in his math assignments, too. Kids are like a sponge; sometimes they absorb information without even thinking about it.

Who chooses the subject matter for these assignments? Apparently second rate writers and political hacks sell their work cheapest because they seem to write much of the homework that I see. Often the example sentences are not even good examples.

These are usually pre-printed assignments, too. That means that they are being mass produces and taught at lots of schools simultaneously.

Why can they not use quotes and paragraphs from famous literature? Let that sink into our children's subconscious instead. "Find the misspelled words in this poem by Shelly", "What is the topic sentence in this paragraph by Mark Twain", etc. I am sure much of the classic literature is public domain.

I am completely against this teaching. I think teaching should be completely unbiased. After all, teachers are not supposed to teach us how to think, but they should help us to know how to think for ourselves. Their opinions regarding matters outside the classroom have no place in the classroom. If public schools have worked so hard to keep religion out, why shouldn't they work just as hard to keep personal and political bias out? I'm not sure how this could start to be turned around, but I do know it would have to start at the top. I dread looking to the future when my kids will be in school and dealing with this same thing. I might just blow a gasket or two.

I'd like to see political slants removed from education ... and if they can't be removed, then they need to be labeled.

Global warming is one of those areas ... if you tend toward the liberal side of things, you believe that man is causing the world to get hot, if you tend toward the conservative side of things, you believe that man is an insignificant part of it, but we are teaching our kids only one side.
