Well, I'm like you...my mom died of colon cancer and I was due for my first colonoscopy when I turned 30 because of my family history....well, that was 2 years ago and I still cant get the nerve to do it. But, I am a nurse and have seen the procedure done a ton of times and the worst part they say is the Golytely drink that you drink the night before. It is also true that you will be very well medicated and not remember anything. Different dr.'s use different methods from Vercet, which you can have a conversation through the entire procedure and not remember a thing...to Demerol or Valium, etc.
Thats all I can tell you other than it is something we both need to do!!

Worst part is the day before, prepping.
I load up on diet ginger ale, i get bloated and I'm not hungry. The laxative isn't bad, you just don't want to be too far away from a toilet when you hear yourself gurgling, and, no, you're not going every 10 minutes all day..
As for the procedure, the worst pain is the IV.But that's no worse than an injection.
I remember being taken into the procedure room, hearing the doctor tell me we're ready to go, then the next thing I remember is being in recovery.
Then you go home, you might have gas, and you might be woozy from the anesthesia. When I got home, I napped a couple hours, and was fine.
Guess what I'm doing Wednesday?
PS,,, It is recommended thah after the procedure you go easy on the food, nothing greasy the rest of the day.

A little info I think should be considered about this drug Versed ( Midazolam ) that is used for Sedation for many medical procedures..Sedation and General Anesthesia are not the same and quite a few people being given Sedation
think they are being given General Anesthesia!
There is simply no good or valid reason to ever purposely induce amnesia during a medical procedure. It is only a recent development in medical thinking that amnesia is somehow a "benefit" to the patient. On occasion some
some patients will remember a bad experience. Forgetting does not mean it did not happen!!
I feel that if people were aware of the effects of this drug they would Opt For Another Drug!
Erasing someones memory of what was done to them is wrong!!
In fact, many people who use Versed for " IV Sedation,Conscious Sedation" Twilight Sedation, during a procedure are Awake For The Entire Procedure but remember nothing, often Believing They Were "Out" the whole time.
Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like setting broken bones, colonoscopies, endoscopies, dental procedures like extractions, conscious sedation, twilight sleep, so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort.HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THOSE SENSATIONS WILL NOT BE EXPERIENCED!!!!
A note from an anesthesiologist
I agree that using midazolam alone in painful situations is wrong. I've heard people getting colonoscopies and screaming, and maybe they remember, maybe they don't.
A note I got from someone on Yahoo Answers who did have a bad experience..This is very disconcerting... My sister said she heard me screaming from the waiting room but assumed it wasn't me. When we left we heard another female patient screaming. I did a lot of research since your post, thanks so much for the info.
Here is a note from a Dentist Who uses Versed
I've used Versed 1000+ times during oral surgery procedures and I've never had a complaint. It's a miracle drug because it is safe and it causes you to not remember an unpleasant experience. My answer to him is isn't it better to have not experienced the pain than to have forgot it. No wonder you have had no complaints they have no memory of the procedure.....
I feel that giving a drug for amnesia is cruel I would not want it done to me!
A strange development in medical thinking that it's okay for a patient to have
pain as long as they don't remember it and think they slept thru the procedure..

Don't sweat it, it really is no big deal...it used to be that that the "prep" was the terrible part (you gotta be real empty!) but they've vastly improved that, and the procedure itself is relatively brief and may well save your life. A little embarrassment beats the heck out of dying!
But really, you will probably get two drugs when they do this; one is a 'valium'-type drug to relax you, and the other is a pentathol-type drug which will make your memory of the procedure extremely vague anyway!
The worst (and only actually "uncomfortable") part is that afterwards they will park you on a stretcher somewhere (as you are coming round) and they won't let you dress until they hear you fart! (This shows the procedure has not hurt you...or maybe it just entertains the nurse whose job it is to listen?)
Best wishes...

I woke up during mine too. I don't remember it, but they said that I was moaning and they had to give me more pain killers. The pain is a normal part of the procedure, but many times they don't give you enough for pain to get you through it. Of course, they never TELL you how painful it can be, and since THEY are not the ones in pain, it's no big deal.

I've had it done twice, it's a piece of cake, HONESTLY. Before they even start, they give you an IV with Valium and something else. Both times- they told me to turn on my side, and that's all she wrote. I was out like a light each time! Don't be scared, I wouldn't lie to you.

Mate, just relax and cop it sweet - they will give you drugs to relax you. If you have a history of cancer it is very important for your well being to have this done. It's just a short time then its all over. I have them twice a year - my father and brother both died of colon cancers very young.
