Bad air and hot, hot summers. Ahhhh, home :)
PS: SFdude, I don't know where you stopped, but Fresno is a hole. Not only do they have more crime, they also have more gang killings than LA (last time I hear stats on it anyway). Bakersfield also is not all greasy diners, ect. If you are only seeing Bakersfield from the highway 99, you're missing 99% of it. You can drive for, oh, a good 30-45 min off of 99 and still be in Bakersfield.

I have to agree what zaleonia1 said that all you see is what is off the 99. That is all I used to see when I used to visit my mom in Delano....crap!. Now I live in Bakersfield with her,my bro and boyfriend and it is great living here. I lived all my life in Southern California and quite honestly I will never move back. Bakersfield is very kick-back,mellow and damn the people are sooo nice unlike Southern California people who are rude and I was getting fed up with that already. I used to say the same thing about Bakersfield that it's a craphole when in reality it's not.

Bakersfield is the heart of California's Bible Belt. It's all fundamentalist churches, greasy diners, and farm houses. It wouldn't look terribly out of place in Alabama, Texas, or Kansas.
I've had to refuel there a couple of times. But honestly, if it wasn't on the main road between the metropolises of Los Angeles and San Francisco...I wouldn't think much about it at all.

that was my first thought.

I drove through Bakersfield on my way to Yosemite from Los Angeles last year and the impression I have is "What an absolute s**thole."
We stopped their to have dinner and went to some Chinese restaurant/cocktail lounge. I was so glad to get out of that place.
Sorry dude. I don't know why anyone would want to live there. Fresno seemed a little prettier and that's not saying much.

Nice farm land, is a mid sized city with a somewhat reasonable cost of living compared to other areas of southern,CA but has easy access to other parts of California via a great regional transit system.

I knew a guy that lived there his name was Tank. He and his wife Sharon always sniffed glue- this was 30 years ago. He had a metal plate in his head and was an ex con. He was from Bakersfield. Sharon always said Bakersfield, sun , fun , stay . play. Tank always said Bakersfield was for fightin, and f***ing.

Bakersfield is a conservative, "western" feeling town. You could easily mistake it for parts of Texas. It was the butt of many jokes by the late comedian "Charlie Weaver" (Cliff Arquette).
