It would help to know what motor we're working with. The old small blocks are different than new motors.

i own a repair shop,and if its broken you wont see it turn any at all when the engine is turned over its pretty rare that these things brake off at the shaft though,it could be something else also,good luck.

Car won't start, period.
If you have just a hairline crack in
the distributer cap, car might start,
but will run rough.

take the cap off and turn over the motor. if it doesnt spin its broke.
