Good and evil, Good being the light side, evil being the dark side.

I've been a Wiccan for 13 years, and I honestly can't recall ever hearing those exact terms used.

However, within Wicca as I was taught the religion, we acknowledge all aspects of the universe: creation and destruction, life and death, light and darkness. We do not seal off any part of this as being "evil". Therefore you will find Wiccans who feel called to honor darker Gods and Goddesses, such as Loki, Mars, Hecate, the Morrigan, or Cerridwen.

What you might be thinking of is what is sometimes referred to as the Right Hand Path and the Left Hand Path -- that is, the use of magic for either beneficial or harmful purposes. By virtue of the Wiccan Rede ("If you harm none, do what you will"), Wiccans are almost by definition dedicated to the RHP, although some (like myself) also feel comfortable performing binding spells and spells to hasten the action of the Threefold Law upon evildoers.

Hope this helps.

That's not universal, at least in its interpretation.

Wicca is (typically) a religion of polarities. Dark and light, Inner and outer, North and South, Night and Day, Sun and Moon, Male and Female and on and on.

The dark "side", is usually spoken of by people who believe in discrete "good and evil", and think there is such a thing as a white witch and a black witch. There are many witches who are simply witches, with no reference to "white" or "black".

Perhaps white and black are carryovers from Christianity, where people believe that one is either good or evil. Sort of the polarity of God and Satan, and believing that one has to follow one or the other.

Many Wiccans believe that good and bad are categories that people simply can't fit into. We all do good and we all do bad, and it is the degree to which we do each that determines where we are on the scale. Many Wiccans believe that what we do will return to us, for good or ill. The law of Karma doesn't pass anyone by.

I doubt that anyone can be completely "white" or "black". Anyone trying to claim to be so is simply looking for approval, doesn't really understand what a continuum is, or is still hanging onto Christian baggage.

The other answers are right, but rather vague, so I thought I would clarify for you.

Light, or golden wicca, is the use of wicca to enhance a person's way of life. Dark, or black wicca, is the use of wicca to harm either a person or an object.

Being a gold myself, I use wicca as a tool to strengthen those around me, to heal others or myself, and to assist with bringing people up. I use it to show respect for others and my surroundings.

I can't understand black wicca.......I won't do it, and I really don't see how it will benefit anyone, since what you do comes back on you 3 fold. I know I don't want that kind of luck in my life.

My personal beliefs (yes, I am Wiccan/Pagan) include Gray...not black and white. Black is simply the destruction of negative energies, etc. White is purity. No one is Black or White, only Gray. As someone else said, no one is absolutely good or absolutely bad. Don't fall into false assumptions, do the homework for yourself, and make your own beliefs. (Not meaning to sound mean or disrespectful, that's just what I didto further my own education.) Never stop learning. Blessed Be!

Many wiccans don't really subscribe to the idea of 'dark' or 'black' magick and 'light' or 'white' magick. (or energy work).

Dark usually applies to evil or negative. Light usually refers to good or positive.
