Tell her to stop worrying. Diabetes, especially Type 2, is pretty common and can be well controlled, sometimes by diet alone. Look on the positive side, she's already given up smoking, now she can start eating a healthy diet. I was diagnosed 2 years ago and I changed my lifestyle, lost about 20 lbs and am fitter than I've been for years. It's not all bad.

My gf, when she was first diagnosed with diabetes, used Seattle Sutton until she got a handle on what foods to eat. It brought her sugar levels down from over 300 to around 100. Just remember that you can't cheat.
