I think they might mean to tell the child to be good because we belong to Christ- so the child learns to remember that although we are saved by our faith, people see our lifestyle and we want to represent Christ properly

It is a reminder to them to do things that are pleasing to the Lord.

No, not everyone who claims to be a Christian, is a Christian. Even those that are true Christians sometimes need to be reminded. We, Christians, are human and by nature, because we are human, will sin. Being a Christian does not make you exempt from sin or good all the time.

When Christian parents do this, it is called good Godly parenting!

Considering the number of people who complain here about "bad" Christians you should realize that some Christians don't follow what is taught. If you don't want you children to be the "bad" kind you need to remind them to be the "good" kind.

Christians aren't supposed to be good, just saved. (At least according to many)

The book of Jamse says that your works should reflect your faith, but there are many who don't seem to pay attention to this.

Still, Christ said that none of us are good, but only the Father.

Whatever... I'm not a Christian anyway.

LOL I guess they could say "You have to be a consistent Christian", but some words are a little big for those little fellas.
In any case, I think it is a pretty general directive to give ti little children, or to adults for that matter.
Like saying: "Be good!".

Because they refuse to think of their bad kids as "not christian", but the second anyone who is christian besides their kid does something bad, suddenly he/she is not really christian...
double standard anyone?

when a person says he is christian he is not saying that he is good. he is admitting that he sins. It is about accepting guidance so that you can try to be good.
