i want to get a genital piercing... i was wondering.... after a year or so, once i take out the piercing, will i forever have a hole in my skin? or will it eventually close up over time?
and, are there such things as barbells that ARENT metal? maybe made from silicone or plasitc? if not, do the standard metal barbells sound off metal detectors?

I have 28 piercings, most larger gauge and I've never set off metal detectors, so you should be fine with one piercing

As far as the hole closing up, it really depends on what gauge its done at and how you heal. Usually the hole will close to a point you cannot reinsert jewelry, but it may never FULLY heal.

For the type of material, I rarely suggest anything other than surgical grade stainless steel or titanium for new and healing piercings, but you could use PTFE but make sure the material you choose is able to be autoclaved to sterilize it. Once healed you could use whatever type of jewelry you like, though I would stick with a sturdy material so it doesn't break and hurt you (that means no acrylic, its weak and porous, so over time the jewelry will smell, badly)

Most piercings will close up in time as long as you don't keep them in for years. Every piercing will leave a scar, even if it is minimal.

Yes, you can get non-metal jewelery, but I wouldn't recommend it. The material can break down over time and that just isn't good. And unless you're planning to gauge your genital to something like a 00 in solid barbell, you should be okay. I've never had any of my piercings set off metal detectors.

It depends on how long you leave it in and your body. A year, you might have a permanent hole, either way you will have some minor scarring.

You can get ptfe or tygon barbells, plastic (acrylic) is not appropriate for fresh piercings and isn't good to be worn long term. It can break down and harbours bacteria.

Most body jewelry won't set off metal detectors. Wands are more sensitive than the walk through kind, but even then I've never had a problem, and have only talked to one person who did (and he had some very large ga. piercings)

well it depends what genital piercing you do want.. by your user name i dont know if you are a man or a women. but if you are a m an there are certain piercings that do pass throught he urethra which can cause you to have to urinate sittign down.. (since there is a new hole their now) if you are woman.. well i hear a vertical hood piercing can be irritating and there is a possibility to loose feelign called desenitization but it is rare! all piercing will eventually close up someday. btu there will always be a scar! (not that noticeable though of course) anyways.. you should get stainlesss steel. i do not think they wikll set off metal detectors. but how often do you go through metal detectors anyways? lol

but there are acrylic barbells.. but theses are mainly for retainers... and are not for long wear. as they cannot be compltetly sterilized an are porous which can trap bacteria.

but here are some links for you to look at! there are many genital piercings out there for men and women! =]

as much as i like physique mods, there's a line and this "piercing" crosses it. that's ideas sugery. you're drilling a hollow on your head, exposing your ideas to the exterior worldwide and all infections that contain it. this is merely inquiring for Menengitis and different infections.
