Depends on your MOS as well as what all you've got on your record before enlisting. There are ways in which you can enlist at a higher grade than E1. Generally, the highest you'll be going in as is an E4 Specialist. To get your hardlines you'll need a little more time in service. After corporal, you'll need to attend BNCOC, or Basic Non-Commissioned Officer's Course, to attain E5 Sergeant.

All in all, it will take approximately three to four years.

It all depends on you. Basically the four ranks before Sergeant (Pvt, Pvt, Pvt First Class, and Specialist/corporal) are all automatic promotions. Meaning you get them no matter what (as long as you dont really screw up) after a certain amount of time. Sometimes people even get them faster, like before you even get out of basic, for doing a great job. If you want to join, try to get promoted before you leave by recruiting friends or doing well in PT tests. Ask a recruiter! Many people join as PFC's! After that, promotions are based on a point system. Good ways to accumulate points are by taking college courses, and doing well in PT (physical training). After you accumulate the points, you have to go in front of a board and do an interview. If you ace it, you get promoted. They will ask you any number of things from the soldiers creed to the army song to current events!

Essentially, it depends on you as to how long it takes. It could take 2 years, it could take 8...it's all on you!

It depends. What your MOS is, what the job slot calls for, Etc.. You didn't specify which private (there is a private E-1 and a private E-2) you meant, so I'll assume you mean a buck private (E-1). You'll average a rank between every 6 mo. to a year and that's with superior fitreps. So I'd say between 3- 4 years.

As many have said it really depends on YOU and the MOS you choose. If you are a hard charger, and really want it, you could probably do it 3-4 years. But the MOS you choose could effect the pace at which promotion is available. Just go for it, and show the Army what you can do. You have to be "deliberate" about your career, and if you are serious the Army will see that and reward you.

It depends on the job you get, how hard you work, and your chain of command. I made E-5 in 2 years and 3 months from the day I left for basic training- I was fast tracked for working hard- volunteering for taskings on weekends etc to learn my job better. With my job the promotions were easy though- high demand and not to many people who wanted to stay around!

I had a great chain of command that really helped me too. They pushed me to go up for Sergeant even though I thought I wasnt ready- guess I was!

I have seen other people in for over 5 years who hadnt made Sergeant!

Depends on a lot of things...

For example, a native Spanish speaker who joins the army to be a Spanish Linguist, puts on E-5 rank once they get to their permanent duty station and qualify on their position (generally, I woud say no more than 6 months after arriving to their base).
