Maybe you have tachycardia. If your blood pressure is normal, it may be some weird electrical thing your heart is doing. I get that too. check it out here:

Actually, the symptoms you are describing are a classic description of agoraphobia better known as a Panic Attack or Anxiety Attack.
1) Stop drinking all forms of caffeine immediately. No coffee, tea nor sodas with caffeine. Switch to decaf versions of your drinks immediately. Do not drink more than one drink of alcohol a day. The downswing is very problematic with anxiety sufferers.
2) You should visit a general practitioner to be checked out to make sure there is no phsiological explanation for your symptoms.
3) If you check out ok from the General Practitioner then you should try to see a psychiatrist. They can accurately determine if you are having Panic Attacks and what drug or drugs are used.
Ativan is a fairly good anti-convulsive class of drug used to help reduce panic attacks if prescribed properly. The problem is most doctors don't prescribe it properly for stopping the onset of attacks. They prescribe it to be taken when you are having an attack which is too late, or futile for breaking the pattern.

I have panic disorder. I've had it for 13 years. Or should I say it came out 13 yrs. ago.
I too didn't know what it was and went to the Dr. he said the same thing that the hospital personnel told you and I was shocked! I had a great life and didn't understand.
It is usually genetic or runs in families.
It is the "fight or flight" mechanism biologically kicking in. It feels like you are "maxing out" right?
Don't try to figure out why, just go to your regular doctor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to get a diagnosis.
If you do have anxiety or panic disorder it can snowball very quickly.
Sometimes people become agoraphobic and become home bound to stay or feel safe.
I was diagnosed by my reg. doc he referred me to a physciatrist he prescribed me anti-depressants (Zoloft-also for anxiety) and he also prescribed therapy.(only went once).
It took me 2 weeks for the meds to kick in and to stop "freaking out" before I could get in my car and go to work.
I also take Zanax as my (911 pill). It is a sedative which you may need now so you can relax.
I'm sorry you are dealing with this. It's been a major pain in my a** but it can be managed.
Good Luck - please go to reg Dr. It is a process so don't wait. Tell him what you suspect it is and what the hospital said.
How you feel is what I call "emergency mode". The hospital is not the place for you though.....Sorry again, I know how you feel..

If you've been checked out and all is okay, it sounds like anxiety or panic. You're zeroing in on your state of health, and as soon as you feel something is wrong, you panic, and speed up your heart rate. It will take time, but learn to "ride it out." When you feel stressed, think to yourself, "I've been in this situation a lot of times", this will pass by too. It works.

Anxiety/panic can make you feel like that. I have had anxiety like that before; I couldn't relax at all. Maybe Ativan isn't the right medication for you, talk to your doctor. It may have a physical cause though, maybe they missed it at the hospital.

depends on if it is constantly beating fast or at certain moments.
it could be a panic attack but it doesn't need to be set off my anxiety or panic. I used to have them just sitting at home all of the sudden. It's because the nerves are wired wrong and not so much panic.
but if it's constantly then its probably a heart problem.
For both though you need to take medication.

dude, that sounds exactly what happened to me. I didnt get hot, but it felt like there was a pillow over my face. my breathing felt muffled. my heart raced and i could feel it pounding in my neck -- both sides. my chest hurt.
they tested your heart, and if there was something wrong...they wouldve found it, ok?
I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. i was put on zoloft and my attacks went away. if you dont want to go on medication, then you can try breathing exercises. but if your panic attacks just show up for no reason -- i dont think you can do anything to manage and you should go on meds. i dont suggest you go on Ativan -- find out what your doctor thinks.
go to a clinic, see a psychologist. they help alot with anxiety disorders. it doesnt make you crazy, ok. the chemicals in your brain are just going screwy and making your body flip out. best and things w ill be ok.
to sluggo -- it isnt that easy. i tried that, and whenever i got my attacks, i was perfectly calm, i was trying to go to sleep. i didnt just go on meds at the slightest attack. sometimes, it cant be controlled with telling yourself stuff. its your brain chemistry and its gotta be fixed with meds. simple.

You are having an anxiety attack. I have had these before and they can really be scary. You will need to go and see your doctor about this. I wish the best of luck to you.

I'd go with the panic attack theory... Do you feel really nervous like you're going to die? It's probably a panic attack
