I'm signing up for the National Guard and will be taking my ASVAB soon. I've taken several practice tests and scored in the 90's. I've been told this is a good score. (I'd actually like to try and get it up a bit higher, so I'm studying.) Assuming I get above a 95, how will this influence my enlistment? I plan on becoming an officer after I finish college. Basically, what I want to know is, how will getting a very good score benefit me?

ASVAB is very important. A low ASVAB will keep you out of the Navy and the Air Force. A low ASVAB will make you kitchen help VS a paralegal. A 95 or above will bode well for you.

Anything basically over about a 70 will make you eligible for every job out there. Hint, most people get the minimum score or close to it on the ASVAB. If you get a score of 90 you have the entire military world open to you. Yes, the ASVAB is VERY important, but between a 90 and a 95 it is just going to make you feel better but it will impress your recruiter and other staff. The ASVAB has nother to do with becoming an officer. You will need to take the OAR for that. So go get the officer candidate study guide and work on that while you are enlisted.

The score on the asvab is a common misconception. I am a recruiter, so i will break it down. There are 8 sections to the test
Math Knowledge, Arithmetic reasoning, Word KNowledge, paragraph comprehension, general science, electrical, auto shop, and mechanical comprehension. The overall score comes from the first four sections. To qualify for a job, various sections of the test must add to a certain score. A key example is me, i scored an 87 overall, but due to my scores, i couldnt be a welder in the navy(not that i wanted to, but just an example). Also, the overall score of 87 or 35 or 99 doesnt mean that is the percent you got on the test, it means if i gave that test to 100 people, aged 17-21 you would outscore 90, or 80 or whatever your score is. Also to the person who stated a low score will keep you out of various services is 50/50 right and wrong. The navy marines and air force all have a min of 35, and the army is 31. The Coast Guard sets their min based on the current needs, as of today it was 65. I hope this helps.

ASVAB scores are pretty important if you want a specialized job. There are a lot of MOS's where you need higher scores.

The ASVAB is broken down into sections and each section also gets a score. Certain jobs require different minimum section scores.

Yes, the ASVAB is timed and you can't use a calculator. The test isn't too bad but that depends on your test taking skills and general knowledge of various subjects. I recommend getting one of these prep books
It can make a big difference in how well you do since you'll know exactly what to expect on the test. The higher your score, the more opportunities you'll have and the better jobs you can qualify for so don't take the test lightly just because some people say it's easy. There's a big difference between doing okay and doing extremely well.

The prep/study book will get you used to the timing of the test so you know how long to spend on each question and get used to the time pressure you'll be under. They give you everything you need to know to do well. Good luck!

if you have a 90 overall, you can get into any job you want, your chosen MOS won't matter once you're an officer. I don't remember the exact scores you need for OCS but your recruiter will know. I would suggest if you're going to college, I would suggest looking up Marion Military Institute as they have a program to become an officer in 2 years not four as normal, And you can still get a degree from a normal college at no expense to you with your GI bill in the major of your choice. This program is only available to the National Guard.

It determines your life. Take it from me, I didn't believe it would but I'm 27, have been out for 4 years and what my MOS was converts only over to Police and security. I was infantry 11x. Good luck your score is higher than mine. I scored a 58, but had a GT score of 107. It depends on what you want to be. Right now front line infantry is in high demand and you would be rewarded for it. Plus believe it or not the front line needs really smart troops to.

your asvab determines what you are eligible for as far as placement. the higher your asvab is the more options you have for an mos( mission of service) so you can nearly pick exactly what job you want to do.

yes, it can get you a high grab bonus and qualify you for basically any job in the military. I'm not sure if it helps with officers but definitely assist in enlisted options
