The first thing you should do is check to see if your county school district has a "book depository" or "obsolete books warehouse". We have one here, and that's where I get the majority of the texts I need.... FOR FREE! :) Can't beat free....

You can get them many places, as others have mentioned. Ebay, half.com, B&N, Borders, and other book sellers. Another website is www.myhomeschoolstore.com. It runs pretty much like ebay except it's mainly geared towards homeschoolers. Also, try hooking up with a local homeschool group. Sometimes they have a library of books you can use. Other homeschool families in the area may be willing to give or sell for a small price books that they no longer need. Also some local libraries have an extended loan option of a couple months for textbooks and educational material.

I would suggest getting away from "text books." Just my opinion, but my kids did better when they could do more hands on stuff. We still use a math curriculum and a workbook type Language Arts program, but for History and Science we do more reading and research papers. Apologia has an AWESOME science curriculum! My daughter loves it and I cant believe the things we are learning.
Check out Saxon math and Math U See for math. I use LifePac by Alpha Omega and some Abeka for Language arts.
If you are just starting out, try to find a support group, it helps tons!
Good Luck, feel free to email if I can help more.

btw- Don't even get me started on the socialization thing! I saw someone chime in with that. Home Schooled kids have the advantage there and learn to really interact with all ages, not just "follow the crowd." Sorry! Couldn't leave that hanging!

Any curriculum website will have stuff for sale, Mardels usually has a large curriculum choice, and you could also look to your local homeschooling group, now is the time in which people are trading up for the next year, our's is having their big book sale in a few weeks. Also look at the library, we were able to check out the books and renew for I think six months, long enough for my son to work through algebra a few times. Also call around to school districts, alot of time they have overstock or they replace their books and sell theirs for cheap. This includes private schools and Christian schools.
Good luck

There are tons and tons and tons of companies out there. You can use them if you want or just make use of the library. You don't HAVE to buy books. Many people don't use textbooks in their homeschooling at all.

Try doing a search for homeschool resources. There's a lot out there.

Wherever it is that you live, go to your local school(s) and ask to talk to the Media Specialist. Every year schools must get rid of excess books and YOU can get them for FREE. Also you can go down to the local School District Warehouse (usually in the summertime) and get materials from them again FOR FREE. Every five years the schools must 'Adopt' and 'Unadopt' new materials for language, history and science and we as Homeschoolers can benefit from these.

You can also try places like Amazon.com, Ebay(although you can't get the teacher's editions) and HoughtenMifflin, but they can get REALLY expensive.

I second Melissa.

As much as possible get away from textbooks. Don't just bring school home. Go the whole way and really do something different, something better, something you will all enjoy.

Read, research, learn together. Have fun.

the easiest way to find "text books" is on the internet, but i'd say that they are really expensive!! i guess that's why schools use the same books over and over again. my suggestion is " go to a second hand book store in your area". i am sure you will find what you need:)
