We had a dinner for my mom's birthday this weekend at a nice restaurant with about 19 adults and 3 kids. We were served by two staff. One bill came to $174 and the other was $220 (they put each servers on their own bill). My dad gave them each $50.00 and I gave them each an additional $20.00. Was $70.00 each a good tip? They girl seemed cool with it but the guy looked a bit pissed and had been so jovial dring the dinner! Was it not enough? They both were great servers!

Then why did he look pissed? I gave them extra as they served our table for a bit over 2 hours and it took away from other possible tips. I thought $70.00 was generous too!

Usually the tip is 15%, so for the $220 bill about $35 would have been acceptable. You gave a good tip.

Well it was an acceptable tip. it was over 15%. Most times when you have a large group like that resturants add 20-28% onto the bill.

$70 is very good- but 2 folks serving 22 people- especially 19 of them adults- would be no walk in the park-

A $60.00 tip would of been appropreate for the whole cost at 15 %. that would be $30.00 each, 20% would tip out at $78.00 total, and seeing you tipped them out at $140.00 total I would have to say you left them a great tip.

That was way good! I have always been told that 15 percent of the bill is appropriate, that would have been about $60.00 total. Maybe you just misread his demeanor.

That was a great tip. I don't know why the guy would looked pissed, but he certainly had reason to be.
