Part of it is something called the circadian rythm. Basically your body gets used to doing certain things at certain times. Which is why if you have trouble sleeping and waking up when you want to, it's often recommended that you go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day.

In part you've reduced stimulation to the brain, and it eventually will take it as a cue to go to sleep, for lack of anything better to do.

mine doesn't, my brain won't turn off. I take Advil Pm to fall asleep
