Don't put any focus on the words she used. Drawing attention to them just makes it all the more interesting for her to use them and get a reaction from you. Answer her question as age appropriately as you can. I chose to tell my son (he's six though) that there was no devil as he would dwell on this and would be frightened. I did tell him that sometimes people did bad things and that they would be taught how to be nice by God when they got to heaven. This took the focus off the whole devil thing and encouraged more questions about God. We're not overly religious but it's a good foundation for children and a lot more of a positive image than the devil. Let's not forget to find out where, at 3 years old, she's been exposed to language like that because that's the devil that needs a serious talking to!!!

It depends on your religion. If you believe in God and the devil then tell him that the devil lives in hell and take it as an opportunity to share more if you want. If that isn't your philosophy then tell him who the devil is and that it's part of the Christian religion and that he lives in hell. It does no good to lie to your child just explain it according to your beliefs. A secular 3 year old is not a bad thing. Then explain to him that they are bad words and hell is only to be used when discussing the devil b/c it is considered bad word whether you're a christian or not.

If I were to answer that question I would simply state that the devil is a made up imaginary person used to scare little kids into being good, that it is no more real than the cartoon characters she sees on tv occasionally. I would say the same thing about god if she asked me about that.

First thing- I would wonder is where your 3 year old heard this. Then, depending on your beliefs, explain how you feel about God/Devil.

Tell him there is no such thing as the devil, that he's just a story and really doesn't live anywhere. Then you won't be guilty of brainwashing your child before he can defend himself.
