Hello all, here is my question. Any opinion would help....
I have been in SEVERE pain from my wisdom teeth coming in for about 3 days now. It started out just being a little "swore", but has developed into pure out annoyance and pain.
My dentist prescribed me amoxicillin incase of developing infection until I can see my oral surgeon.
I have great respect for my dentist, as he does for me (i hope so anyways haha), and am very afraid to ask for a pain killer to help me sleep at night (without feeling like a crack head)... until I can see my oral surgeon. I work 7 days a week and cant afford to lose sleep over mouth pain. If i seriously am IN pain, I should ask for something like this right? I have tried all OTC medications, all they do is keep some swelling down. I need 4 HOURS OF SOME RELIEF!
Also, when I try to eat I chew on my swollen cheek.

Hi, I'm a dental hygienist and I'd love to help you out. The extreme pain you are experiencing is probably something called "periocoronitis", and basically that is an infection of the flap of skin that is still partially covering the emerging wisdom teeth. When the teeth are still fully covered by gums, no bacteria can get under there and cause problems. But when the teeth start to "break through", bacteria will get underneath and you are unable to clean the area with a toothbrush or floss. Eventually, if the teeth are coming in straight and able to come in all the way, the gum infection would go away, but for you now, the best thing is to have the teeth removed, you really don't need wisdom teeth at all anyway.
Your doctor did the right thing in giving you antibiotics, but they will take about 4 to 5 days to kill enough bacteria to let you feel relief. In the meantime, I highly recommend using an Ibuprofen product, such as Motrin or Advil (this works far better on mouth pain than Tylenol and never take aspirin before you are planning any kind of surgery such as getting your teeth extracted as it can cause problems getting the blood to clot up afterwards) As long as you don't have any kidney problems, you can take 800 mg of Ibuprofen a day, that is the same as a prescription strength of Ibuprofen (our office very rarely prescribes pain pills, we've had great success with the 800 mg of Ibu. ) Also, I strongly recommend that you use a warm salt water rinse for your infected gums. Take 1/2 teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water, dissolve and then swish that around in your mouth, specifically back by your wisdoms, several times a day (spit it out when you're done). The salt will pull moisture out of the tissue and decrease the swelling, also the bacteria don't care for a salty enviornment. With the swelling decreased, you should have less pain and will be less likely to accidentally bite on the irritated tissue.
If this doesn't seem to help, call your dentist back and let him know you aren't feeling better. I doubt you can get your extraction appointment any sooner because it's better that the gums aren't infected when you have the surgery, it makes it easier to get effective anesthesia and heal up better.
Good luck!!

Your dentist is well aware that infection in wisdom teeth is very painful. The oragel is not a bad answer. Sometimes you can soak a hot tea bag and place it onthe area, it has tanic acid that helps, but I bet oragel tastes better. Youmust rember your health is more important for your job. You are going to nees some time off whe you getthe teeth out. It may only be the night you do it, but you will be on pain killers, and bleefing. If you don't listen to the directions= no spitting, no swishing, no sucking through a straw, no head up and down movement( physical activity) DO not brush the socket!!! if you think you truely have food stuck, let your saliva wash it out, For the first three days you must be careful or you will losse your blood clot. Get a spray Bianca for the taste, brush your other teeth with just water for three days, and rest your head! If you need to sleep callthe first dentist for pain killers. He may require you be in the office to see him. If you can call the oral surgeon everyday to see if he has had a cancellation to get in quicker. Teeth can make you very ill- don't fool around with it.

You sound like you're in an abnormal amount of pain. I experienced my wisdom teeth coming in and three out of four were impacted and while it hurt I didn't lose sleep. However I did need to get all four removed since they were not growing in correctly.
It sounds like you need to get your wisdom teeth removed but I'm no dentist so whatever. You may want to go on actual pain killers at least at night so you can sleep. Vicodin works like a charm but it does make you feel really out of it if you take too much.

I agree with what Ladysashya said above. I'd also see if you can get a quicker appointment to the oral surgeon.

I'd get some pain pills...that's what they're there for. Just take them at night so you can sleep and suffer through the day if it bothers you that much.
