The slang term "sucks" is actually a slight against gay men. There are many who see being gay as a terrible thing and have over time come to use disparaging remarks against gays as a negative for things or instances that are considered terrible. Use your imagination for the "sucks" concept. Another disparaging slang phrase is used to mean something terrible that originated from the gay community is the phrase "butt in a sling", as exampled in the sentence, "If I don't get these reports in to my boss in the morning on time he'll have my butt in a sling."

Most of society hasn't got a clue where these phrases come from but they use them anyway. By the way, I'm a gay male so I would know.

Sucks comes from "sucks cock" or "sucks dick", which is obviously negative. Nobody wants to suck dick. Rocks comes from rock music.

On preview: wow, weird word filters.

I think that you are taking things way too literally. They are just used to explain something that's either pleasant or unpleasant.
