I work at a Animal Hospital and today the Humane Society brought in a puppy that was 4-6 mths and under 10 lbs, it had bit a lady and had not had its shots yet. The Humane Society ordered it to be put to sleep because the owner said it was acting agressive around her kids. We tried to talk them out of signing the papers and letting one of us take the dog home and they refused. I consider this Unhumane and Abuse because a PUPPY that age could be counciled with a dog trainer and it could also grown out of it. Because the animals do not have voices they do not have rights is what some think. They are garbage that can be tossed away. Also in Lousianna Pit-Bulls are used for Labortory and then put to sleep because they can not be adopted out. I own Pit-Bulls and never found them to be agressive, because that is not aloud in my pack. How can I start to stop these situations and speak up for these animals. It's got to stop. How can I protest the Humane Society?

If the owners signed the dog over to the humane society, they are legally responsible for the dog. Which means they cannot adopt out a dog that has shown aggression. It sucks, but that is the law.
If the owner signed the dog over to the humane society with the understanding it was to be put to sleep, they also legally have to put the dog down. They cannot adopt an animal that was signed over as a euthanasia without owner consent. Again, it sucks, but it is ths law.

I used to volunteer for the Humane Society and it broke my heart when some perfectly good dog that just needed a second chance or was the wrong breed was put down. There is hope though for you in Louisiana. Here is the Louisiana address for American Pit Bull Terrier Rescue, PO Box 87232, Baton Rouge, LA 70879-8232.

These people are all volunteers who are dedicated to rescuing Pit Bulls. If you contact them whenever a Pit Bull comes in to the Humane Society they may come and pick it up. Most breed rescue organizations work out some arrangement with animal shelters to rescue these animals. I hope this helps you and good luck in saving these wonderful misunderstood dogs. Maybe someday you will be able to help this rescue group such as fostering dogs for them or some other way.

It's unfortunate to think that the people at the Humane Society, of all places, could be this ignorant and uneducated. There may be more to the story than what they revealed to you, but if there isn't, then I would say:

First, the Humane Society is not above investigation from law enforcement. If you truly believe that they are not treating rescue animals humanely and are not ulitizing public resources (they are non-profit and work off of donations) in the best interest of animals, report them. It's a place to start.

Second, work to change the policies at your Animal Hospital to mandate that pets being brought in for euthanization (for reasons other than end-of-life, of course) be signed over to your hospital's care first. That way, y'all can make another decision for an animal without having to seek consent. If your policy is mandated by state law, write to your congressman, and keep writing until you get a response.

I'm from Louisiana, and never heard of this before. Do you know where this is located. Also, the humane society is not as strong as you think it is......but you're pretty much at the mercy of your boss at the animal hospital. Now also, I thought when an animal bites someone, it had to go under quarantine....and not put to sleep.....that is the law in Louisiana....if you're from there. Best of luck to you.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I don't know what to do about this situation. I feel the same way about pitts I LOVE THEM they are amazing dogs and horribly misunderstood.

All you can do is spread the word, talk about this situation, talk about how wonderful pitbulls are to everyone who will listen. Create a website, a myspace page whatever you feel is necessary to build support. The loudest scream starts with a whisper and builds from there.

Good Luck

There are dogs who have purposely been bred to be aggressive. Bad breeders pair two dogs with bad temperaments in the hopes that their offspring would yield as many badass pups as possible. These puppies would not make good companions and would be bad dogs no matter who raised them. Unfortunately, there is a strong buyers market for such puppies, and bad breeders will continue to do their part in breeding bad dogs.
Sad to say, animal shelters often have to deal with such nonsense ... you've seen this first hand.

I would contact the humane society head quarters,or like the other person said-PETA.
That was definately wrong of them to do that.
Puppies love to play rough at that age-maybe it was rough playing with the children and bit out of play.
Just because they thought it was aggressive, does not mean that it actually was..and if so,it is young enough to be trained.Putting to sleep should be the last resort-when all else fails!!

If it is the law it is the law. If you want to work around animals, get used to some of the bad sides of it. If you can't take what you just witnessed, you won't be able to stand what will walk in the door next, you never know.
