With all the great 1911 .45's being produced today (Springfield, Kimber, Smith & Wesson, STI, Para Ordanance, etc) who do YOU consider the best overall?

Even with the excellent variants out there, I'd opt for a Colt. If you can afford a factory tuned one, even better yet.

I would go with Colt or Springfield. The FBI tried out several 1911's for their contract. After many test perform, they went with Springfield. Sure, the gun they make for the FBI runs for about 2500.00 in the commercial market, but that says a lot about their product. You could also go with one of the custom builders that will cost you over a thousand dollars, they will also make a good gun. Colt took a lot of heat in the 1990's. Their product was pretty much crap. Now days, they are making great guns once more. They are the ones who started it all, and probably the best. Anyone who tells you Colt sucks, tell them 1994 was 13 years ago. These days Colt can't keep up with the high demand. Their cheap models will run about 700 starting.

IMHO, Springfield makes the best 1911. They been making the best 1911 for some time. Lot of people tend to boycott Springfield cause it's Brazilian made. To some politics is very important and take it to the heart. If you could look past that, you're set. Colt,Kimber,Springfield,Smith Wesson all make 1911's for under a grand. Out of all those pistols Springfield Loaded is the way to go. If money is not an issue, I would look into Wilson, Les Bauer and the other custom makers.

I have no experience with STI, Para, or S&W 1911 models. I think that Kimber is better than Springfield (Springfield got into sloppy machining and poor qaulity MIM). I have a Kimber Custom II and have put 300 rounds out of with only FTF on the first round sometimes. I think it is one of the 8 magazines I have or just lousy mag springs. I think that your question should be answered from the "mass produced" point of view. Les Baer and Wilson are special limited manufacture guns and should be in a different category. Kimber offers the owner more variables than anyone else and they are tight as a drum. They also offer blue steel models (for a premium). But the greatest 1911 has to be the countless WWI/WWII contract models by Colt, Remington-Rand, Ithaca, and others. These guns started it all.

When it comes to a Model 1911 I am a purest. I like the Colt or the Springfield Armory.

The Kimbers are nice but most on the used market had an external extractor. They switched to the internal extractor a year or so back. So there ok two.

The Les Baer Custom...probably the Premier II model.

Anything better will involve having a 1911 expert custom assemble and tune the pistol..........oh, wait, that what Les Baer does!

Kimber used to be up there, but they went for quantity over quality years ago and are just milking the good name and reputation with mass produced pistols. Just search Yahoo and you will find a lot of unhappy Kimber owners.

As to Colt, same story. Colt's Manufacturing Company of today is not the same company John Browning worked for, being owned by foreign interest, the State of Connecticut and the United Auto Workers Union, among other miscreants.

Bound's hubby here:

The current makes of 1911s that exist today have survived the test of time. Each offers something unique to the M1911 buyer. Personally, I lean to the older Colts and the Springfield Armory target pistols. Very high quality at affordable prices.

The greatest M1911 made? It is the one that is resting in your hand, waiting to serve you as the need dictates.

Good luck.

I dunno, there are dozens of top of the line smaller companies making 1911's. All of them are very high quality.
Springfield, Kimber, and Para-Ordnance are probably the three bigger ones that come to mind. A 1911 from any of them is a very high quality weapon and will serve anyone well.

Les Baer or Wilson. They are custom guns, but will worth the price.

Of the "standard", single stack, single action type, factory makes, I still like the Colt. Even if you do have to dink with it.

Of the newer "plastic", double stack, double action type factory makes, I like the Taurus 24/7 and the 145.

I am an extremely happy Kimber owner. It has great groupings and hasn't malfunctioned once after 1500 rounds. It gets my vote.
