I'll be your partner if you like me to be yours. My first language was english and I switch to japanese when I was 10. I can speak both languages well but to be honest its easier for me to speak Japanese now, since I've been living here for about 20 yrs. So I'm thinking I might be able to help with your Japanese... People seem to have really overcomplicated your question.
tomodachi 友達(ともだち) , yuujin 友人(ゆうじん) , and nakayoshi 仲良し(なかよし) all mean friend, but tomodachi is generally accepted as the most common and general.

There are a lot of ways, just like there are in english (buddy, pal, mate, comrade, etc.).
The most common is tomodachi (友達).
There's also
mabudachi まぶだち This is an outdated way of saying it. It's probably the equivalent of "chum."
yuujin 友人 You notice this has the same kanji as "tomodachi." the "jin" part means "person", so this does, in effect, mean simply "friend", but it's a lot more formal way of expressing it. "Tomodachi" is much more common.
tomo 友 an abbreviation from "tomodachi." Very casual.
aibou 相棒 This means more like "ally" or "companion" more than friend.
shinyuu 親友 Again, this shares kanji with "tomo" and "tomodachi" and "yuujin." However, it also has "shin", which means "intimate" or "close," so this is closer to "best friend" rather than just "friend."
