What is the first step to becoming a Wiccan?

The first step is deciding if Wicca is right for you, which I'm guessing you've already done.

The second step (part one) is starting to practice Wicca -- to live the religion, including (if you choose) the practice of witchcraft. I highly recommend the book "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" by Scott Cunningham as a good beginner's book, since it contains pretty much everything you need to get started.

I also have an ebook called "A Practical Guide to Witchcraft and Magic Spells" by Cassandra Eason which is quite a handy text for beginners. I'd be happy to email it to you; if you like you can contact me and I'll see about getting it to you.

The second step (part two) is to start reading! You'll find yourself doing this a lot in Wicca; it's a religion where the learning process never ends. The Wicca for the Rest of Us site has a pretty good book review section:

http://wicca.timerift.net/books.shtml

and is a good site about Wicca in general.

I advise you to stay away from anything by Silver Ravenwolf, for reasons outlined in the following essay:

http://wicca.timerift.net/ravenwolf.shtml

Perform both parts of step two for at least a year. Ready? ;-) The third step, if you desire it, is a formal self-dedication to the path of Wicca, usually consisting of a ritual in which you state your intentions and your dedication to the path before the Gods and whoever else you have invited to be with you on this special occasion.

Another valuable undertaking is to network with other Wiccans in your area. I highly recommend the Witches of the World section at Witchvox:

Just use the pull-down menus on the left to find individuals, groups, shops, and events in your area.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me. Best of luck to you on your path!

First step, go to whywiccansuck.com. That website was made by a Wiccan. Second, avoid anything by Silver Ravenwolf. Thirdly, research the living crap out of it. Sure you found one website that's done wonders for you, but don't stop there. Research the point of view from people against Wicca, research people's point of view for Wicca. I can't stand people who constantly look only for that which is along their view. You need to take in all things. This being said, Wicca does NOT come from the Anglican term for wicked. I am an Archaeologist/Linguist and I find no etymological correlation. It does, from my research, come from the Old English term for male witch. A lot of people use witan as the reason to call Wicca the "religion of the Wise." Most scholars agree as that is not the origin of the term.

Probably the most important step is in investigating the religion and deciding if it's what you really want.

A good place to do this is at http://www.magickaschool.com

There is a free one-year course that allows you to study the religion and decide if it is right for you.

Anyone can decide that they are Wiccan, which is not much different than saying "I'm a Christian", but it is truly only after you have done enough study to determine what Wicca really is that you can decide that it's really right for you.

You can email me if you would like more info.

Finding the path and believing... and studying studying studying and doing more studying.. wicca is a path that you find within yourself. study everything you can about the wiccan/pagan religions. study online, buy books, buy fluffy books to know the difference... But look within yourself, study the path, and ask yourself inside and out if this is the correct path for you...
If you have any questions feel free to email me..

But if you do decide to follow the wiccan path, also follow the wiccan rede. "an it harm none do what thy will"

Good luck and Blessed Be

I would say the first step would be to read. Read EVERYTHING you can get your hands on. Learn all you can about it, then decide if it is for you. If it is, then read some more and decide on which particular tradition you would like to follow or if you would prefer to remain a solitary.

Reading. Try anything by Scott Cunningham.

Eartha Q: If you want to be ignorant of other religions, that's your business, but please stop spreading your bullsh*t. It's people like you who give Christians a bad name.

"Wicca" does not come from "wicked."

Just needed to clear that up; I do agree, you must read and investigate first.
