why do ex's come back?

I think they come back because they loved you before, and you broke up for what seemed like a major issue back then but now seems like a silly reason. All the time you were together you got to know and love each other and after you break up you start to miss each other once the reason you break up becomes something you don't care about anymore. But sometimes, this causes more problems, and usually another problem you have with each other surfaces and you break up again, and maybe even come back for more another time.
This is a great example of why communication is a huge factor in relationships. If you decide you still love them and come back, you need to tread carefully and be sure to talk it out very thouroughly.

Because they would rather not be ex's. If the breakup was not a mutual affair, somebody will feel depressed, cheated, or like a mistake has been made. This might encourage them to look for another try.

Because they want to make your lfe harder.. by seeing them walk away twice. The second time is harder, so make sure that if (s)he asks you back don't let him(her) get in your head again and go back with him(her).
Trust my advice I took an ex back once and he just made it harder to move on after the second time he left!
