If i need to put down my dog, and i will be leaving town soon, should i just let the people at the kenel do it while i am away? or is that mean. i kind of want to be there, but it would be totally emotional. yet, i will be emotional anyway.

I had to do this once. It was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make. The only reason I chose it is because my dog was dying and in tremendous pain. She was very old and nothing could be done for her.

When it came time to put her down it happened very quickly once the shot was administered. My daughter and I stayed with her and loved her and talked to her to help her stay calm and know that she was not alone. Our dog was like a family member to us. I would not want a family member to die alone thinking they were unloved or cared for. Would you?

Yes, this was very emotional but life is like that. Lots of things bring out the emotions in all of us. That is natural and good to have those feelings. Otherwise we would be nothing but mannequins who have no hearts.

Good Luck!! :)

sometimes people find it easiest not to be there, and keep putting it off. this can be worse for your dog then not being there. If you tell the people at the kennel that it might need to happen it should be ok, make sure you know what you want done with the body.
A similar thing happened at the cattery I work at, where someone went away knowing that their cats health would deteriorate when they were away as the cat had cancer, but the cat was still happy and she couldent bring herself to put it down to early. I think the cat would understand.

Sorry you will be losing your pet. Maybe make an appt at the vet before you go out of town, you can be there to say good bye...

I have a dog that is getting very old and hips are bad... I so wish there was a service that someone can come to your home and put the animal to sleep... In the pets home where is it comfortable, relaxing, with family... not the cold vets office and the animal is nervous and in a cage, etc.

Be there... It's just like showing respect for a friend that died. Like a funeral. I know it's hard, but I'm guessing your dog is sick and your putting it out of its pain and suffering. Be there... if you aren't there, you will hate yourself later for not being there. It's hard, but just take a deep breath, say your last good byes and leave it to the vet. But be there.

P.S. I am very sorry... good luck.... and hold on there

No offence but you sound kinda cold! Everyone gets emotional if they have to put down their dog. I'd rather be there for my dog than not. I dont want the last thing my dog seeing is a stranger.

You didn't say why you are putting down your dog. I would like to know why.
When you put down your dog you should be with the dog. When I had dogs I had to put down because of old age and all that comes with it.. I held my dog while they were given her the needle. She didn't die alone or scared she died in my arms. That is how it should be.

Oh, that is so sad. Are you sure you can't offer your pet to a rescue organization that could locate a good home for it?
If you must do it for another reason, take him to the vet..It will break your heart, no way around that. But, at least you will be there to comfort your pet until death.

It is not as bad as what you think. And I feel that your dog deserves to have you there when he is put down. He has been there for you I'm sure. Now you need to be there for him. He literally just goes to sleep.

I think, if you really loved your dog, then you should be there with him in his last few minutes. He wont die alone, but knowing that you loved him. You shouldn't be afraid to be emotional, that just shows how much you really cared about him, and people will respect you for that.
Hope you don't have to put him down :'(
