8 min. per side and you will end up with an inedible mass !Coat(brush)each side w/ olive oil,put under broiler for 2 min per side to sear and lock in juices(hence the olive oil to help seal) Then put on MIDDLE RACK FOR 3min. per side.The "searing process should be done on TOP RACK closest to heat source.Catsup on a filet ? @$10 to 14 usd a lb ? NO NO NO !! RUIN a cut like that w/ catsup, Please !!

Funny I'm cooking dinner tonight, and have a filet thawed. I'm going to make it my favorite way, when I don't have grill access. As for how long to cook that varies according to how thick it is and how you like it done. To me 8 min per side would be shoe leather, but I love it medium rare.
Oh geez sorry just noticed you said you have no range...first read I thought you meant grill. DUH sorry. I'm still going to post for future reference, since you probably don't have all I'm suggesting in the house anyway. I would still do the same seasonings, and I would try sear both sides by broiling a couple minutes each side at the beginning. I'm sure it will be yummy no matter what! So here's what I suggested;
I also find you get a much better steak using a pan, since you can sear the meat on high first. First I preseason with McCormack's Steak s Seasoning Salt. This adds a yummy flavor and I seldom cook any steak without it, even if I am making it differently. Shake on each side and let sit approx. 5 min. I then heat a pan with Basil Flavored Oil (I've tried them all...roasted garlic is good but Basil is perfect). You want to get the pan really hot but not smoking. While it's heating I season the meat usually with garlic and onion powder (put on one side...put in pan...season other side in pan). Put in pan, it will be smoking, and heat on each side for about a min until it is darkening and outside looks done. Then lower heat and cook to desired point.
What I often do when steak is done is have chopped mushrooms and shallots, remove steak, soak up most but not all of any leftover oil, add butter (or I can't beleive it's not butter if dieting lol), and quickly stirfry them and pour over the steak, serving immediately.
Enjoy! And if you don't have the stuff I suggested maybe try it this way next time. Trust me I experimented all sorts of ways to cook a good steak indoors and this is by far the best I've come up with. It's so flavorful that on a good steak like Filet I prefer making it this way.
Hope you enjoy!

Ketchup ??? Nooooooooo ... teach him now !!! You may as well teach him to pour gasoline on a beautiful Angus fillet! You have all the ingredients.. I'd add some butter, but hey, that's the American talking. Yes.. check after about four minutes on each side.. A medium steak will yield slightly when pressed with a fork. A well done steak will yield firmly. Let that steak rest for a few minutes to lock in the juices before slicing.

Rub each side with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper and broil until desired doneness. The spices really give the steaks a nice flavor. Slice some potatoes up thin and drizzle olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper over them and broil them as well. You will have a nice side dish to go along with your steaks.

Log on to www.about.com, they have really cool recipes. You can also try something from Rachel Ray on foodnetwork.com, she has some pretty neat ideas, and you'll be done cooking in under 30 mins.
